Andreas Kaufmann – Closing The Loop EP

Each month we shine the spotlight on one SoundGym member by reviewing one of their releases for our Music Spot feature. This month we focus on the 'Closing The Loop EP' by Andreas Kaufmann

This is an eclectic selection of music, veering from folk to soul, to indie. It's all tied together however by Kaufmann's gorgeous, layered guitar textures. The production is extremely polished for a young producer and it surely won't be long before this audacious new talent reaches a much bigger audience.

The EP opens with the alternately skittering and lush indie swing of 'Unseen'. It's a strong start to the EP, gradually building in layers of piano and synth over those ubiquitous guitars. Next track, 'World' is built around folky guitars and contains clear nods to both Pink Floyd and Tim Buckley.

Next up is the R&B tinged 'Will It Fly'. It's a welcome departure – taking the EP in a slightly different direction, complete with stacked harmonies and smooth guitar lines. It's impressive that despite the different influences at play here, the five tracks do hang together very well.

Penultimate track, 'Slow Down Summer' does hold on to a little of the R&B flavour of the previous song, but picks up the pace to that of a low-slung sun drenched indie jam. The EP is completed by 'Day'; here the guitars are amped up a little further – rounding things off with a blast of energy.

All in all, this is an EP of surprising depth and variety – well worth your time. If you want to hear more from Andreas Kaufmann, you can check out his Spotify and Soundcloud pages.
