FXpansion - DCAM FreeComp|Free VST Plugin

Free VST Plugin: FXpansion - DCAM FreeComp

Our free plugin this month comes from FXpansion – the studio famous for its BFD drum software. DCAM FreeComp is primarily designed as a bus compressor and uses FXpansion's circuit-modeling DCAM software.

FreeComp is modeled on a classic console bus compressor design, and therefore it really comes into its own when used for the kinds of tasks it's specifically designed for, gelling drum groups together on a bus for example, or enhancing the punch of an entire mix when placed on a mix bus.

Of course, it can be used for other things too; you might use it as a subtle compressor on an individual mix element for instance, and it is also a handy tool for sculpting heavy, pumping compression effects.

The compressor interface is simple, with six options for attack speed, no release control, and only three options for the ratio. There are rotary controls for threshold and makeup gain, as well as the expected input and output gain controls. What the plugin lacks in precision, however, it more than makes up for with character.

What do the individual controls on a compressor do, and how do you set them to achieve the sound you are looking for? take a deep dive into all things compression-related on our latest article explaining compression.

You will need to register with FXpansion in order to access the free download, but it's well worth it for such a useful plugin. DCAM FreeComp is available in 32 and 64 bit, and AAX, VST, AU, and RTAS versions are provided. You can download it for free now from the FXpansion website.

FYI: I just tried installing the Mac version (according to the version number it should work on my OS) and get an error saying 'The developer of this app needs to update it to work with this version of macOS.'. I reported the issue. If you run into the same issue, know you're not alone :)
