No_message – Another Error EP

Each month we shine the spotlight on one SoundGym member by reviewing one of their releases for our Music Spot feature. This month we focus on the Another Error EP by Dutch producer No_message, AKA SoundGym member Dirk Visser.

We don't know much about Visser's No_message project, but his debut EP surfaced online at the beginning of the summer, and it's a beautifully cohesive statement of intent. 

The EP begins with '403 Forbidden'; a house-tempo track that also includes nods to trance in some of its harder synth sounds. There is a sci-fi tinge to the music here, and the neon arpeggios and unusual harmonic progressions share a sonic landscape with Daft Punk's Tron soundtrack. 

Another Error continues with '404 Not Found', and the absence of any drums or percussion reinforces the movie soundtrack feel laid down by the opening track. The music is incredibly lush – the standout feature is a glowing chordal swell that gradually washes over intricate, electronic-organic textures.

Final track '504 Gateway Timeout' (are we noticing a theme here?) picks the pace back up. The burbling synths recall the Bladerunner OST, while the trance influence resurfaces in some of the synths and melodic patterns. This has the effect of reminding the listener of Vangelis and Energy 52 at the same time!

These three tracks hang together extremely well as a collection of songs; a great deal of thought has clearly gone into both the order in which the tracks progress, and the consistency of the soundworld across the EP as a whole.
