I can\u2019t find the post but I wanted to write to that person and let them know that we\u2019ve all been there. I started using sound gym in 2019 and I could not hear the difference between compression settings at all ! now six years later, I\u2019m starting to hear it. Wanted to tell that person that it\u2019s OK to be frustrated. Hang in there. The value of ear training is the better you can hear, the better you can tailor the track to the artist and the song. Will help you make 2nd by second decisions about what\u2019s best. That person seemed really frustrated. Have other people found this to be true? I started by using <a target='_blank' rel='nofollow noopener noreferrer' href='https:\/\/webtet.net\/apcl\/#\/parametric'>https:\/\/webtet.net\/apcl\/#\/parametric<\/a> and training on white noise until i could hear the frequency bands, and then started doing full mixes\/songs which also have full spectrum frequency content, and even there i came away with a lot of insight about for instance wow recordings from the 60s have very little bass frequency content or i imagined this guitar from this song i like to be very full-sounding but now that i've trained using the recording i see its actually very mid-heavy Then i started uploading my own creations to the training page and found it was even more directly applicable, like taking songs i was working on and after studying them say yeah that guitar is way too boomy around 300hz or i EQ'd all the low out of my voice! why did i do that? I'll change it Ultimately i think if we can find better ways to connect our training to our practice of mixing and producing it will be better, right? And by training in this way I was able to start recognizing those specific frequencies which really helped me hone my awareness of those ranges. <br>There were 2 exercises which I created - one was with 64hz, 120hz, 200hz, 400hz, 500hz, 800hz, 1,25khz static bands and the 2nd one was with 1,25khz, 2khz, 4khz, 8khz, 10khz.<br>It took me a couple of weeks of everyday consistent practice to start recognizing 400hz, 1,25hz, 2khz and 4khz, but most importantly - I started feeling a tad bit more oriented at the end of each session. Are you letting ear-training slide from time to time?<br>I just did a 6-day streak of no ear training as I was mixing all day every day. \ud83d\ude05<br>But honestly, I don't see it as a good thing. I wish I'd done at least 15 mins a day before starting to mix. <br>I've seen this happen in the past that for a week off of ear-training it takes me another week to regain the lost 30-40% previously-gained hearing sharpness (EQ & Compression mostly).\ud83c\udfa7<br>So time and time again I'd tell myself that it's worth putting in the reps every day. Even if it's just for 10-15 mins.<br>Very important - if you find yourselves in such a position, be kind towards yourselves and just start again. <br>That's crucial.\ud83d\udc46<br>Usually the voice in our head that tells us we're no good, that we can't do it etc., comes from other people and their opinions (and personal pains) about themselves. Some times in my life are just more busy. I see it with language learning as well - you can't learn unless you do it daily. Personally I don't believe that's true. Although there may be some advantages to daily practice, and of course it helps some people build a habit, progress can definitely be made using other study patterns. And of course platforms like to have us logging on daily, I think that's a big part of it! Actually, you are probably right. Consistency is key, but it does not necessarily mean 'daily'. What's perhaps related to your point, rest is very important in the learning process. What I've noticed though, is that this applies to actual rest. In my case, many times I say 'rest' but what I tend to mean is 'move on to another skill-honing activity', and this may sometimes take resources that the other activity needs.<br><br>Allow me to end on a philosophical\/poetic note, simply because I feel like it. To me, being human is almost identical to skill-honing; the skill of a musician, a writer, a scientist; the skill of attention, the skill of deep thought, even the skill of walking. \ud83c\udfc6<br>After 7 long days of no Soundgym ear training I somehow came back stronger and more attuned than ever.<br>Just passed a level on Distorted Reality and The Compressionist. I played Peak Master a few times and it felt great, felt like an adventure rather than just another grind. I dunno, maybe that's cuz it's Christmas time but I felt more like a child explorer than a 'serious mixing engineer'. <br><br>That felt so good and real.<br><br>Dane motivated me big time on a Open Discussion call today by saying: ''I believe there are two forces in this world - one is good and another one is bad. The good one promotes (in thought) building, growth and creation, and the bad one - idleness, tear-down, not-enoughness, unworthiness and therefore - unproductiveness.
