🎚️ Aight y’all, it’s check-in time at the Church of Funk and Frequency ⛪
look here mane .. ya boy just cooked up 6 tracks, all mixed, mastered, and seasoned to taste together they bake down to 11 minutes and 14 seconds (updated with epic crash - from 10:01 to 11:14) of straight audio soul food .. i ain’t up here actin’ like i’m quincy jones’ illegitimate nephew or nothin’, but i did put some elbow grease in this gumbo .. from the kicks to the keys, every knob been twisted with intention, every fader moved like i owed it rent 💸
now here’s the real; i need ears that ain’t just pretty .. i need ears that practice .. not folks out here listenin’ through micky deez drive thru speakers, but folks who know they signal chain 🎤 from they chicken chain 🐔
give me the truth .. if the low end too muddy, say it .. if the mix got more glue than elmer’s, holler at me .. if it slap so hard it made your baby mama drop her phone; testify .. don’t hold back 😤 i want the cold cuts, not the deli smiles .. i’m out here tryna tighten up like a sunday hat before communion. 💒
so slide through, press play, and throw that feedback like a brick through my studio window 🧱 we buildin’ character out here - brick by brick and bar by bar 💯🔥💎
🎤 peace, love, and compressors with character. ---- 1. ---- 2. ---- 3. ---- 4. ---- 5. ---- 6. ---- 7. ---- 🎶 that's it 🎶
#1 sounds balanced just a bit crashy on the snare/clap/hit. Nice beat. #2 OK overall. #3 lots of upper mid clashing- I'm afraid there would be little room for vocs that wway, #4 Sound is balanced but uneventful. This is the least produced so far,- not much to it (those horns don't slap, #5 underproduced- box sounds least fave so far, #6 Interesting ideas.. Drum sound is too predictable imo... Overall, you seem capable of making beats.. the sounds seem typical ITB sounds... I would like to hear you make more of the sounds in the grooves by fu$%ing w them- make them your own. Overall this is an example of quantity over quality, I'm afraid. You got confidence but I recommend diving deeper into sound selection and manipulation! Cheers and thanks for sharing!
@John Carden mad respect for takin’ the time to peep all six and drop the rundown .. real talk, i see what you mean on some of these .. that upper mid buildup in #3? that’s fair, i got tabla, distorted git, and the kick all dancin’ up there, so unless i duck the bayan even more with probably a multiband compressor, it’s gonna feel tight for vocals .. but feedback taken - that one's gettin’ another look.
as for the crashy comment - not sure if you meant tonal harshness or just level aggression, ‘cause it’s the exact same snare from #6, same EQ, same chain. #6 got no comment on it, so now I’m scratchin’ my head wonderin’ if it’s psychoacoustic or context dependent .. either way, that’s a note i’m puttin’ under the microscope 🥴👎
I’m also catchin’ the subtext about sound design – you want more movement, more modulation, less out the box presets and more character .. gotcha 😎👍 that’s what the next lap’s for .. appreciate the straight up delivery 🫡 ---- to everybody else: don’t hold back .. if it slaps, say so .. if it’s sloppy, call it out .. we here to get sharper, not sugarcoated 💪
and John - checked your comment on Erni’s joint too .. saw you diggin’ that minimal 4 on the floor groove .. not my lane stylistically, but I get it .. taste is subjective - my bar for groove just happens to live in another zip code .. no harm, no foul .. keep showin’ up and throwin’ punches 👉👌
much love to the soundgym fam .. let's all level up together - steel sharpens steel 🥷
A steadfast bass player and vocalist, lifelong learner, and hands-on music maker, blending her Nirvana-tinged roots with a love for storytelling, sonic exploration, and self-produced creation. From Rock Camp to mixing her own record, @Alex Angelich is this month’s SoundGym Hero!
Although I was born more under LedZep's sign than Cobain's, it's nice to find another 'crusader' knee-deep in the task of exposing our children to the great music we had around and learned to love as kids and teenagers. Good music is still being made today, but it's sometimes hidden behind tons of noi$$$e. Thanks for sharing your experiences, I really wish you a long, happy musical life!
