Would appreciate input on this mix, not yet mastered. I have a recording studio with 2 other musicians, song was written, performed, recorded and mixed by us. Reference track: The Hand That Feeds- NIN. One of my partners does most of the mixing, I pop in and out to offer opinions, as my day job allows me. I want to boost the top and scoop a little of the mids in the master. Would appreciate your feedback, thanks so much!

Hi Kellie, I am not a specialist in the genre yet excited to share my observations. These guitars are quite powerful!
Comparing it to a reference, I am sure the mix will benefit from the presence / high end boost (feels like it might go all the way up to 2-2.5db in total) however it's probably the best to achieve it through adjusting the faders rather than EQing the mix/master buss. Maybe extra saturation on guitars will be a nice addition.
The kick lack a bit of punch and is too quite. Some compression might help the kick or maybe even the whole drum buss with a little extra gain, now it feels that drums are a little too deep in the stage (except for the snare that is cutting thru).
In general now it feels like low mid 200-400hz where the snare lands is too loud, but if the kick will get louder with compression on drums and high end will get some boost it wouldn't be an issue anymore.
Hope it helps
Good luck!

Hi Kellie, killer track! To me the track needs more presence as it's quite dark. Even stylistically. I would be a bit more generous 5-6k area of the snare, maybe even a db or 2 boost at the fundamental of the snare to to keep the body and weight of the snare strong. I think the guitars will benefit hugely with some kind of Multiband saturator like Saturn 2. Rather than eq-ing it in and only saturation above 10-12k. I really like the low end of the track and think it suits it quite nicely! Hope that helps!

I agree with @Sergey Alimsky regarding the kick. I also think the bass could be louder with an eye to not conflicting with the kick.

@Sergey Alimsky Thank you so much. We dropped the kick down quite a bit, because it seemed overpowering, will re-listen. A more modern reference would be Idles- The Wheel. I really appreciate your time and comments.

Hi Kellie, this is a cool track! Very much reminds me of Them Crooked Vultures! Looks like you've got some good feedback already but here are my thoughts:

- the mix has a bit of low-mid mud
- the snare could be cleaned up to snap a bit better in the mix
- the bass and kick need better separation. I'm barely hearing the kick - which I think is partly a level thing but also masking from the bass

The vocals seem to be in a good place for this genre! With some good EQ work and some balance tweaks this will be a killer song! I wouldn't wait until mastering to do that as it'll be too late to fix things like the bass/kick relationship.

BTW, I have been a member of Nail The Mix for almost two years. Absolutely fantastic place for mixing education and mix critiques. In case you guys want to get another source of mixing input...

Thank you so much! Yes! TCV, Royal Blood, Idles.... I learned from my friend and mastering legend, Maor Applebaum, that google drive causes major issues, and a lot of what I was hearing, and you were hearing, were different from the actual mix (I should have thought of that). I'll try to repost from Soundcloud or we transfer. I am a member of multiple groups, but I will join Nail the Mix as well! Really appreciate your time and insight.

Definitely can feel the Them crooked vultures vibes as mentionned before ! I agree, the guitar could use with a bit more clarity, making them ever so slightly sharp, to really pierce through ! I also get the feeling they are slightly too dry compare to the rest of the mix, everything seems to be whole but the guitar tends to stand out a bit for me. Otherwise, i really like the groove and the grit of the song ! Very desert rock :)
