Hi everyone,

This week is my first time here in the mixdown training room. Usually, I am a live sound engineer, this is also my first time mixing a well-recorded studio recording. I'd like to hear what you think of it and all feedback is very welcome.

Oh, and I must say that I love this concept. It's amazing to gain experience in mixing studio recordings from home.

Hello Jim, this is a nice mix, I liked it, I'd say that for improving it I´'d add a little bit more of presence to the snare in the verse, sounds just a little bit dark and a little little bit far away in the verse, so I'd decrease the attack of the compressor as well. Overall, the mix is fine. Cheers, Leonardo from Costa Rica.

Thank you very much for the feedback Leonardo, it is much appreciated. I will dive into my mix again to see if i can get a brighter snare sound. Cheers from the Netherlands.

Hey Jim, welcome to Mixdown Training Room and thanks for joining us! If this is your first time mixing a track, I think you did a pretty great job, the mix sounds really tight! I don't know much about live sound but from my limited knowledge, I think compression doesn't factor into the equation as much as EQ. I'd say the EQ/balance on the track is great and you should start putting in a lot of time to learning compressors. Right now the track sounds a bit flat in terms of movement, so watch a few videos (I always suggest Michael White at mixingwithmike.com) on compression and movement to familiarize yourself with it. Hope to see you back again!

Hi Jim, welcome to the Mix Down Training Room! I agree with the others, especially on the "flat comment", but it's a good first attempt! ;p

Thanks for the feedback Ben and Magghy !

I tried to work some more on the mix today. I tried to brighten up the snare and added some compression. Especially on the instrument and drum busses i added more compression. I also side-chained the instrument bus to duck down a bit when the vocal comes in. For me, the mix sounds better now but i wonder if the compression might be too much.

Here is the new edit.
(Warning: i noted this mix is considerably louder since i forgot to turn it down to -14LUFS after playing around a bit, sorry for that)

next weeks i will focus more on compression and movement. Thanks again for the helpful feedback.

Jim I didn't listen to the second re mix because I wanted to give feed back on the orig. I think it's balanced really good. Maybe the kit needs a bit of highs added but it sounds smooth as is. Highs would bring it forward a bit. Which perhaps it could use. I'm not listening on headphones I'm on my monitors so I can't hear super detail when it comes to delays/verbs but on my monitors it sounds like the guitars could be spread out with a short delay so they get that wider faux stereo fullness. Tiny bit though. Good job.
