Duff – “Il Mondo E’ Impazzito”
Hey guys,

Here's my mix of “Il Mondo E’ Impazzito”. This week I wanted to get some experience with the Analog Obsessions, Channev channel strip. It's pretty much used on every track to build colour and saturation.

After listening to the rough mix, my strategy was to give this the full punk treatment. Which is basically to keep everything loud and dry. Just using very short delays and small ambience to move things around.

I loved the drummer on this, I do love hard-hitting drummers. This guy was smashing the crap out of his kit. The Toms were the hardest to get to sit right. I think he was just bashing them both at the same time.

I've been using the SSLComp on the parallel compress bus lately. It gives that little punch to the drums.

Nothing special on the guitars. I used the Pultec trick on each of them. Then the Vitamin to tame a bit of the 2k range for the vocals to have some space.

I used the Ditzel guitar amp sim on the bass. Just because.

I did fix some of the pitches in the vocals with Melodyne. The egregious one at the end just bugged me. I used the Channev and CLA-76 in bluey mode, cause its punk. I seem to be doing this a lot lately, quad duplicated the backing vocals with small delays and formant changes using the Alterboy.

As always, all comments are appreciated and welcomed.

Wow, i loved your mix! Those drums are so big and solid, would you mind to get deeper in how you treated drums especially kick and snare? Did you use any sample/augmenting? They sound rock solid. I'd like to know also what did you send to the parallel ssl bus comp (I think slow-ish attack & fast release), the whole drum kit including overheads and rooms or only kick and snare? I liked also the tuning on my vocals, though in some moments it made a couple notes too "square". Thank you so much, cheers from Italy!

Hey Mark, really digging how hard the mix hits! SSL was definitely the way to go with this one, just adds so much punch. I do think the autotune hurts the track though and takes away from the punk vibe. I know the commonly held belief is if editing is what it was today back in the 50s/60s, all those records would have been made with it. But I highly doubt punk bands of the 70s/80s would have used those tools, it just goes against the natural spirit of the genre.

Hey Guys, Thank you so much for your comments.

@Totonno Nevone , wow its an honour to have mixed your song. I'm so happy you really liked it. I always feel like I know the singer after spending hours listening to them sing. So happy we weren't offended at the tuning. I didn't use any samples that's all your drummer. You'd be surprised how little processing I did on the drums. The Channev channel strip has some magic to it.

@Ben Sinclair , Oh indeed smashing the SSL just makes these songs pop. I've drifted back to using the Waves SSLComp. It seems to take the abuse a little better than other emulations.
