Hey everyone, I hope you've all been doing well! I've been really busy with all things music except for mixing since the start of the year and haven't been able to keep up with this as much as I should. I realized it had been probably 4-5 months since I last mixed something, so I decided to jump back in here and do a refresher. This was a challenging track to get back into.

I wanted to keep it sounding organic as possible, with natural sounding tones and minimal FX/trickery. I also challenged myself to use all the microphones for the mix, which I did except for the acoustic mic (too much bleed and I think the other instruments were louder than the guitar itself). You couldn't really hit anything too hard with compression or you'd start bring up the other instruments due to all the bleed, so finding a balance between the two was tough. The drums weren't the best sounding either, the kick had a major beach ball tone to it and the snare was a bit flat. That being said, the guitars sounded great, the horns were awesome and you got a really good vocal performance to work with, so I tried to get those elements sounding as good as possible.

Definitely struggled a bit due to the layoff, took me longer than usual to do the mix and a lot of my instincts about what to use for certain instruments/tracks were off. If I could do it over, I'd probably try to get a bit more surgical with the drums to see if they could be salvaged and work out the bass a bit more. Thanks for listening! I'm going to try to do at least one mix a month so I don't get rusty again.

Hello Ben
What a project to return to eh? haha yes i agree this was a challenging one.
I also agree on the kick sounding like a beach ball hahahahaha
I can see that we gave completely opposite direction to our mixes. You went all in for the super energetic pristine sound while I went for the calm and easy path.
One thing that I could point out is that the sibilants on your vocals might sound a bit harsh on certain moments.
But other than that, nice approach and welcome back. You should definitely mix more often and have fun!

Hey Ben, welcome back! Good job! The bass is a bit strong for me and the top end of the drums a bit sharp, I agree with Adrián on the sibilants ;P

Thanks for listening! Usually I manually de-ess the vocals but I was lazy and didn't feel like doing it this time haha. I agree though, it was really noticeable as there's a lot of S's in this track and he's a bit hard on them. I actually turned up the bass by 3 dB at the very end Magghy so I may have psyched myself out just before bouncing it.

Hey, I am listening on DT 1990 Pro. and I hear that all elements are dry compared to vocal. So it pops out of the mix. I guess it's intended. But it feels bit weird for me, because it's kinda separated from the mix, other than that sounds amazing :))) Kudos!

Great mix man. The bass could be a tiny bit lower/less 150-250Hz, but otherwise, a really lovely mix. Sometimes it seems like the slow-release compressor on the vocal is smacking a bit too hard/too slow. Is that an LA-2A doing a lot of reduction?

@J N I know exactly where you're talking about, I heard it a few times. It's the FET compressor on the API console by Lindell (Lindell 50). Slowest release on it is 100ms but I think the recovery takes a bit longer. It's only compressing 2-3dB but the fast attack of the FET + the possible staged release make it audible at times.
