Here's my mix of Cryonix - Melancholy. I didn't quite get around to doing many automation moves to bring it to life, but I tried to get a balance I was happy with and a few little extra ideas.

I tried to keep to my concept of doing the mix in mono-sum first, and the difference was immense! I am very happy with this shift, giving me punchier mixes.

I tried to make the most of the kick sample that was there, but I added an extra sample underneath for a little bit more beater sound.

Okay, this was a surprise for me.
Very good! Balance is really nice, and keep in mind that I am very picky when it comes to balance but this time there is no frequency that catches my attention, which means that your mix is enjoyable.

I liked your approach on the kick more than mine. So basically what I did with my kick was that I put some parallel distortion, but yeah like I said in my post I may have over cut around 350hz which left it weak at the end. thank you for that heads up

I find your mix a bit dry overall, which might have been your intention and it completely shifts away from my aggressive approach, for example. Yours is more chill and slow paced. I dig it!

Okay, at the end I did find your bells to deviate my attention from the song in general, so maybe just lower them couple dBs.

Thats all for me. Very good job!

Thanks Adrian. I used to overcook the upper-mids (and end up with a harsh mix) so of late I’m trying to pay a lot of attention to them, and allowing more life in the lower mids, which I used to cut too much of, so I hope that’s showing in the frequency balance!
As for the dryness. That’s true, I hardly added any FX to this at all… just compression, EQ, level and saturation. Maybe that means that the drums don’t feel as forward as they would have if other elements had been pushed further back with FX.

Hey J N, good job! I agree with Adrián on the bells being a bit loud and on the use of effects, probably making the mix a bit wetter would enhance the whole atmosphere ;P
