Disco in 1976 ran at 120 BPM. ABBA parked "Dancing Queen" at 100 and refused to hurry, and that 20 BPM they gave away is the entire reason it still sways instead of sprints. Fifty years after the single first went out in Sweden, here's what actually happened in that Stockholm basement: a drummer chasing a Dr. John groove by hand, an engineer faking a wall of sound by nudging the tape speed between two takes, and a backing track so finished that Frida cried before anyone had sung a note on it.
