The New Way of Learning Sound and Production

In the fall of 2011, Stanford University began an experiment; they launched three free online courses. The first of these, Introduction Into AI, was launched by Sebastian Thrun and Peter Norvig, and enrolment for this course quickly reached 160,000 students. Other major universities scrambled to catch up. MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) were quick to recognise the benefits of running free online courses, and started edX in 2012, joined by Harvard and Berkeley.

In 2018, digital learning is the frontier of education. It is becoming recognised that in the digital age, online learning is an extremely effective way of gaining an education. Studies at MIT have shown that 'digital learning technologies can enable students to grasp concepts more quickly and fully, to connect theory and application more adeptly, and to engage in learning more readily'. There are benefits for teachers too; these technologies are allowing elite instructors to reach a huge, worldwide audience of students. They can now disseminate new ideas more quickly than ever before, touching more people and impacting more lives.

Why Should I Learn Online?

There are proven benefits to learning online, as demonstrated by MIT in a report discussing the future direction of the institute. First and foremost, you can study any time, any place. It doesn't matter where in the world you are; you have access to online learning. You can fit your learning around work or school, and you can do it for free. Furthermore, when you learn online, you are able to study at your own pace and review material when necessary. This leads to 'mastery learning'; you will truly understand the subject area.

Another of the key reasons that online learning is so effective, is that the latest technology can easily be embedded in the courses. It is possible to integrate rapid assessments, interactive elements, games, and videos into a single course. Furthermore, the opportunity to learn with multiple instructors provides a rich learning environment that can deliver a wider overview of subject areas. Discussion boards and online support provide additional forums for discussion, debate and conjecture; and of course, these tools are also incredibly useful for students who are struggling to understand a concept. The best online learning platforms provide one-to-one guidance from subject-matter experts.
