Periodically we shine a spotlight on a SoundGym member by reviewing one of their releases n our Music Spot section and adding their music to be used in our audio ear training games. in this article, we focus on Alonzo Edwards AKA SiMitrē and his single ‘META’
A singer/songwriter and producer based in LA, SiMitrē (pronounced ‘symmetry’), is carving a bold path through innovative and genre-straddling music that is rooted in RnB, but fuses influences from across the musical spectrum.
‘META’ eases in slowly with a lush bass and stacked vocals reminiscent of Moses Sumney. The palette is rich but fragile, SiMitrē’s ragged breath given prominence in the gaps between the notes. The soundscape develops slowly, reversed samples gradually glitching themselves into existence. Cinematic drums emerge from the gloom inch by inch.
It's SiMitrē’s voice however, that holds the spotlight – at turns raspy and smooth, but always compelling. It wraps its way around an insistent hook, bittersweet with regret, that nevertheless becomes a captivating centre-point for the song.
There is much to admire here in both the songwriting and production. The approach to both is similar; a spare simplicity is at the centre of what SiMitrē does – the musical parts have room to breathe, allowing us to hear the detail of the work that has been done. This is a bold approach and it’s one that pays off because the raw ingredients here are so interesting. The sound design and lyrics hold our attention because they are worthy of it. ‘META’ is a beautifully realised vignette that leaves us fascinated to see what SiMitrē will do next.
