Isn't this challange about hearing difference between amount of distortion even when signal is not gain matched? I believe it is the purpose of the assignment itself.
I would believe it if there were not sometimes a difference of really several DBs. I think the idea of the exercise was to teach the ear to hear the amount of carbonation, and at higher levels to really sense the slightest change. It seems to me that an uneven signal distracts from the essence of the exercise. I may be wrong ;)
