Each month we shine the spotlight on one SoundGym member by reviewing one of their releases for our Music Spot feature. This month we focus on 'In Your Presence' by Jessica Wright
J Merce (Jessica Wright) is a singer-songwriter based in Austin, Texas. 'In Your Presence' is the first song she ever wrote. Eventually, she came back to it, added the bridge section and learned how to use Logic so that she could go ahead and record it.
This is raw, emotional work influenced by the likes of Lianne La Havas and John Mayer. Some of the production work here is a little raw too - understandable in such a new producer – but the song shines through regardless.
'In Your Presence' is built around delicate picking, stacked vocals and chiming synths – these elements providing a backdrop for a soulful lead vocal. The lyrics are frank and confessional, drawing the listener into J Merce's world.
There is some work to do on the production, some of the synths and drum sounds could definitely be more polished and up-to-date – but this is a strong start from a new artist who promises a great deal. We are certainly excited to hear more from this intriguing new voice.
If you want to hear more from J Merce, then head over to her Soundcloud or Bandcamp pages, where there is plenty more to check out.
