Magenta Skyy - Impression

Each month we shine the spotlight on one SoundGym member by reviewing one of their tracks for our Music Spot feature. This month we focus on 'Impression' by @Mark Boholiub, AKA Magenta Skyy.

We don't yet know that much about Magenta Skyy. His first three tracks surfaced a month ago on Soundcloud, and we feel that 'Impression' is the standout. When it's good, synthwave can sound like the soundtrack to the best '80s movie you've never seen, and 'Impression' certainly has something of that quality.

The track is built around a repeating arpeggiator pattern and the '80s drum machine samples that we've come to expect from the genre. Despite being built around a repetitive core, the track uses various tricks to ensure that it keeps evolving and holds your attention. Parts drop in and out – some synth melodies appearing only briefly before disappearing completely for the rest of the track. Boholiub also plays around with half-time segments and pauses, before introducing a completely ridiculous synth solo towards the end; undoubtedly the most fun section of the track.

There is perhaps a little room for improvement in some areas of the mix; the drums don't sit in that well, and that leads to the rest of the track sounding slightly thin. Overall however, this is a very musical piece of electronica that shows Boholiub is a producer of great potential.

You can hear Magenta Skyy's other recent tracks over on his Soundcloud page now.
