Treating the whole arrangement like a giant drum kit, this track layers snares, reversed snaps, granular glitches, and stretched-out artifacts into a tribal, fractal groove built for the dance floor. Burner Account by Andrew Reynolds (Doctor MojoTrip) is this month's MusicSpot!
Since this track is instrumental, it doesn’t have any inherent meaning, but is aimed at more of a feeling. One thing I appreciate so much about music is that its meaning is entirely in the ear of the listener. For me, this track points toward a primal sense of being human, and all being in on the journey together, but that doesn’t have to be what it means to you!
Absolutely the groove. I tend to view the whole track as a giant drum kit, so even the melodic elements primary function is to support the groove.
I started this off by establishing a groove for the drop with drums and bass and filled it out with other melodic elements. I created a few variations and then figured out an overall flow for the track, and how to connect each section.
There’s a lot going on with the snare drum. There are a few in the track and the main one has several layers. There’s also a lot of automated spatial effects, and the reversed/snapback layers and glitches as well as a few granular snares that were all added manually. I really enjoy the artifacts added by audio stretching and embraced it a lot in this element of the track.
The track is fairly simple (not many elements) and synthwave is mostly defined (for me) by constant rolling motion rather than big drops/moments. This being said, when I listen to it, the defining moment is probably at 0:16 when the sub is introduced and the kick starts pounding (maybe a little loud now that I listen to it again…). Then at 0:32 when the synths open up the track.
An infinite, sentient, fractal landscape that we are interconnected with.
I’d have to say at a rave or, better yet, an ecstatic dance.
The feel, vibe, and groove of this track were very much inspired by “Bass Ritual” by David Starfire, and I was also listening to a lot Area 52, which is my favorite album by Rodrigo y Gabriella, which you can really hear in the guitar parts.
