Music Spot: Orçun Ayata – Free Will Of A Hill

Each month we shine the spotlight on one SoundGym member by reviewing one of their tracks for our Music Spot feature. This month we focus on @Orcun Ayata , and his new track 'Free Will of a Hill'.

Ayata is from Istanbul, Turkey. He graduated from SAE institute last year, and is currently working as a live sound engineer, both at Sofar Isntabul and with Hediye Güven. He is also a freelance mixing and sound engineer, and has started releasing music under his own name.

'Free Will of a Hill', a dark and expansive electronic cut, was released in February 2018; the lead track from Ayata's Meaning EP. The simple but lush synth arrangements recall the soundtrack work of the legendary John Carpenter, of whom Ayata is no doubt a fan. The unexpected addition of Giancarlo Roberti's solo trombone mid-way through, takes this track in an unexpected but welcome direction. The smooth organic sound of the brass instrument plays nicely against Ayata's cold, monolithic synthscape. It isn't just the Carpenter-esque sound that lends 'Free Will of a Hill' a cinematic atmosphere, it has a pleasingly sprawling arrangement that gives the impression that this track could have been lifted from a science fiction soundtrack.
