ODREE - Cry

Each month we shine the spotlight on one SoundGym member by reviewing one of their tracks for our Music Spot feature. This month we focus on 'Cry' by ODREE.

ODREE are a soul group from Ekaterinburg in Russia, who boast SoundGym member Anatoly Volchay as one of their numbers. Their music is reminiscent of the Acid Jazz movement that originated in the London club scene in the 1980s and rose to prominence in the '90s with the success of acts such as the Brand New Heavies.

In this tradition, Cry is a slow-burning, danceable cut that incorporates elements of funk, jazz, and hip-hop. The group's musicianship is exemplary and although this is a style of music that very much has its roots in the live music world, 'Cry' is clearly and proudly a studio production.

The recordings are crystal clear, and the vocals are stacked high. There are multiple layers of keys, and the arrangement is filled out with guitars and brass. This all adds up to a rich, shimmering soundworld.

A complex mix is managed with dexterity, but the arrangement itself is equally important. The intelligent handling of a large number of instruments ensures that although the track is musically busy, it never feels overcrowded.

You can follow ODREE over on Instagram, and hear more of their music on SoundCloud and YouTube.
