This month's best free plugin comes from Tokyo Dawn Records, VOS SlickEQ is not the catchiest name for an EQ you will have come across, but this is a great little tool, offering remarkable versatility for a free plugin.
This is a semi-parametric EQ that does not offer you the finest of control, and therefore won't necessarily help you to accomplish every task. However, it does offer flexibility in some interesting areas that often aren't catered for in rival plugins.
It comes with four distinct EQ models, each bringing with it a unique set of curves and behaviours; you can select from one of 'American', 'British', 'German' and 'Soviet'. Each of these models is augmented with a switchable option of non-linearity that can add a little colour to the signal.
There are also five output stage saturation options to choose from that can further colour the signal; 'Linear', 'Silky', 'Mellow', 'Deep' and 'Toasted'. TDR explain that these options are 'meant to offer subtle and interesting textures, rather than obvious distortion.' The idea is that they add some of that indefinable 'special sauce' that enhances the signal of audio that is run through the best EQs.
A final nice touch is the addition of an auto-gain option that automatically compensates for changes of perceived loudness during EQ operation.
TDR VOS SlickEQ is available as a 64-bit plugin across platforms (and at 32 bit as a Windows VST). Mac and PC versions are provided and AAX, AU and VST users are all catered for. You can download the plugin for free from the TDR website.
