Tonic Dream – Dark To Light

Each month we shine the spotlight on one SoundGym member by reviewing one of their releases for our Music Spot feature. This month we focus on 'Dark To Light' by Tonic Dream, AKA SoundGym member Ty Deathrage. Tonic Dream is based in Columbia, Missouri, and offers up some super-melodic future bass with this new single.

The track is adeptly put together; parts dropping out to make way for production flourishes so as to never leave the mix overcrowded. There is some inventive stuff going on here too, plenty of game-music-inspired spot FX drop in and out in the blink of an eye. It's always nice to see a producer coming up with a cool idea, and then having the confidence to only use it once on a track. This keeps things fresh and interesting throughout.

On this same theme of musical progression, Deathrage holds back on the vocal here until 1:50 – more than half way through a track that is only 3:15 long. This is another nice touch. By the time the vocal kicks in, you aren't expecting to hear one; it wrong-foots you as a listener and hooks you in to the track.
