U-he’s ‘Tyrell N6’ Analog Modelling Synth

When a developer as consistently good as u-he is giving something away for free, it is well worth taking a look. The Tyrell N6 is a free softsynth from the makers of the excellent Diva and Bazille; a company who can count Hans Zimmer among their collaborators. The synth is available in VST 3, AU and AAX versions, meaning that it will work with most modern DAWs.

The story behind the development of the Tyrell N6 is an interesting one. Tyrell was originally the name of a project by a German online magazine called Amazona.de. The magazine launched a reader survey, and followed up with forum posts, aiming to gather together a pool of ideas that would lead to the creation of a brand new hardware synth – one that would really give the people what they want. A concept was developed, based on a design similar to the classic Roland Juno 60. Unfortunately, it soon became apparent that developing the hardware would take years… This is where u-he stepped in. They offered to develop the concept as a softsynth and the Tyrell N6 was born.

The synth has a lovely warm tone, full of depth and character. For sheer sound quality there are few free synths to match it. There are some really nice little touches here too, that help to elevate it. The chorus, for example, is fantastic, and full of the distinctive character that makes this plug-in special. Other features include a smooth overdrive in the oscillator mixer, filter output that can be fed back into the mixer and morphing oscillators.
