Your Compressor Has a Tempo (And You Probably Never Set It)

Most of us set attack and release by feel, then blame the ratio when the drums stop grooving. But those two knobs aren't tone controls. They're timing controls, and your song already told you what the timing should be.

One number does most of the work: 60000 divided by your tempo. That's your beat in milliseconds. At 120 BPM it's 500, so eighths are 250 and sixteenths are 125. Suddenly the release knob has numbers on it that mean something.

I have so much to learn. I literally had no idea what I was doing in the HZ game. Are there like educational videos or is this site just games for people who already have a level of knowledge. I am brand new to audio engineering.

What do you do when you just can't get a ReBeater right? I've been stuck on Level 34 for over a month. Aaargh

Have you tried using different kits? Some of the drum machines have very similar sounding toms or snare and clap or other things. Usually, when I get stuck it's because 2 similar sounds are playing at the same time and one of them is getting drown out by the other.

I often get stuck at a certain level too. It's tough when you keep getting it wrong for days on end. I also try not to get too fixated on Sound Gym and limit myself to two or three challenges a day.

Even if you think you're doing it correctly, you might find yourself deviating from the reference in unexpected ways. So, when you're getting it wrong repeatedly, how about trying to judge by looking at the sequence light at the top and the timing of when you hear the sound?

As Mr. Jay Key said, changing drum kits makes it easier to distinguish the sounds and helps you understand the character of the kit, so I highly recommend it.
