When a mix sounds “almost” done, do you keep tweaking it forever or call it a day?
🎚️ That “almost perfect” mix, we’ve all been there. Do you keep tweaking until your ears give up, or do you trust your gut and call it finished? Where’s the line between refining and overmixing?
Drop your philosophy below, the SoundGym community will understand.
Things that are perfect are boring. Yes you want to know the rules but after that, after no improvements are possible , break the rules and make it different.
The more you listen to music the more you realize than even the most polished professional tracks aren't perfect. They are simply good enough and that's what matters. Nothing worse than spending too much time mixing something. You get better at deciding when to move on with time. This is why it's so important to have systems and deadlines in place. Without these you can in theory tweak a mix for an infinitely long time and that's not a place you want to be. Rather ship something subpar, move on and work on something else than to be stuck on the same project forever. It's so easy to believe that the mix you're currently working on is somehow extra special. News flash, it's not... It's just another mix.
Set deadlines with the mixes you are working on and install systems around that to make sure you're where you want to be to be able to meet that deadline. Your future self will thank you as this forces you to be more efficient when mixing which is a very important skill to have.
Recently I saw some people speak about 'smart training'. I have been looking around, but cannot find this option anywhere. Where can I find it? Because it sounds very usefull :)
Hi Ariel, click the profile icon at the top right, then click Account Settings. On the page that opens, click Training on the left side — you’ll see it there. :)
Hey guys, would love some general advice or criticism on my latest track. I've been producing since the start of this year and love sharing my music with my friends, but they aren't producers so I dont have access to criticism and advice from other producers.
nice track Cody, you've made great progress if you've only started producing this year! sounds like you recorded those vox yourself? nice job! i would personally compress them a bit more in order to even them out a bit better and would take out some of the low mids as they are a bit boomy sometimes, i would personally put a bit more reverb on the vox as well! your transitions are already quite good but I think you can play around with the transitions a bit more, using some filter movement, a bit of automated reverb/delay and maybe some more impacts, I personally feel like more impacts would benefit the contrast between the different sections, especially after the 2 minute mark as more and more instruments are being added up to the equation :) Keep up the great work, you're advancing very quickly!
Sup Cody, the hats are harsh on the ears, there are a peak for each hat there, you could lower to make it sound balanced and clean. Other than that, good track!
