I am really struggling to hear any difference btw 2:1 and 8:1 ratio in The Compressionist game , esp with that stupid djembe 🤦🏽‍♂️ ; does anyone have any words of wisdom for what exactly to listen for? TY

TY Matt; glad I'm not the only one. Attack time I am actually getting the knack of ; I hear the spikiness of the transient with slower attack, in that the notes are sharper and punchier somehow , vs. smoother (warmer / fatter?) and more rounded off with faster attack

Maybe I'll try with other sounds and see if the ratios become more obvious, because I literally can't hear a difference right now with that particular instrument.

Gotcha. I'm not sure if this came across or not but what I was saying was less about listening *for* the attack and more about what to listen to *depending on* the attack.

To me there is a big difference between 2:1 and 8:1. on 8:1 the tails of the hits will be much louder, on 2:1 the attack will sound louder and more natural. Also a trick I've used in compression and distortion games is that since low frequencies trigger compression (and similarly distortion) more than higher frequencies, the balance of higher frequencies will be higher when more compression and distortion are applied. It may be harder to hear 8:1 v 2:1 on slower attacks, spend some time just switching between the two on slow attacks and make mental notes of what you hear is changing from one to the other.
