hi everyone :) this is my first fully produced and mixed track, everything on this track was done by me so id love any feedback you guys have that i can use to make this mix better or to make my future songs and demos better :) thank you for listening
Thanks for sharing. As always great work for finishing something! One impression is the sub bass that comes in at start of track level is a bit high and overpowers/overshadows vocals. Also consider adding a little intro sound crescendo to pull listener into track.
It's so awesome that you're doing all of this yourself! Great start. I agree that the bass/kick might be a bit heavy and overshadowing the voice. If you have something like Tonal Balance Control from Izotope, I find that to be really useful in helping to map the overall tonal curve.
Hi Rachel :) Yes, I agree... the kick drum and snare are too loud. Try lowering them, I think at least 5/6 dB. (You'll have to do some testing.) In any case, they're now drowning out everything else, and that's a shame. In the breakout, you need to lower it even more with automation. After that, I'd try creating some variations with the drums. The track is interesting, I'm sure that if you work on it well, it could benefit a lot.
Hi everyone, I'm working on finishing a mix for a client today. One area that I have noticed I need improvement is automation. Do you have any steps you follow when you are automation your mixes? Thanks.
I think, the first question you should ask before touching ANY plugin is What this song needs?. Think about the flow of the energy in the song, where it has climax etc. Than, the second question I like to ask What tool, that I ALREADY KNOW, I can use to serve this song. The music, the song should be target by itself, not the tools you are using (and automation is also one of them). When you realize, that e.g. second chorus needs more energy and it's not achieved by the arrangement or the recording than you should think how can I help with that. And then apply some effects. One funny way to practice automation itself is to practice Sound Design for movies or small pieces of gameplay. Start simple e.g. take some footsteps sounds. Imagine that you character is moving 3 steps towards you, then it turns left goes 6 steps, then it goes away for next 4 steps. Than try to make this move happen by the automation (volume, panning, reverb level, eq). Next level, take a short (10 seconds) of gameplay. Watch what happens there and try to recreate that. Good luck!
