Ido Segal – Blackened Footprint

Each month we shine the spotlight on one SoundGym member by reviewing one of their tracks for our Music Spot feature. This month we focus on 'Blackened Footprint', a new collaboration between @Ido Segal and Rem Perry.

Segal is probably best known for his work as one half of psytrance duo, Punxline, with whom he released an album back in 2010, and a string of EPs since. On 'Blackened Footprint', we see him go in another direction though – this track is an electro-house floor-filler.

This is a genre that Rem Perry is well known for, and although it's impossible to tell which of the collaborators brought what to the party, the link-up has definitely worked! The influence of the French pioneers of this genre loom large on this record; funky basslines, glimmering arpeggios and eighties keyboard sounds conjure up a retro-futuristic sci-fi soundscape. There is also some interesting audio experimentation going on here; a short, glitchy breakdown takes this track to a really interesting space.

What really sets this track apart from the crowd though, is the irresistible groove. The way the filtered bass plays of the drums recalls Mylo's 2004 banger 'Drop The Pressure', and that's certainly no bad thing. Segal and Perry clearly know how to get a dance floor moving!
