The Dirty Projekt – Choppy Lips

Each month we shine the spotlight on one SoundGym member by reviewing one of their releases for our Music Spot feature. This month we focus on 'Choppy Lips' by The Dirty Projekt, a duo from Riga, Latvia that features SoundGym member Andrejs Sadkovojs alongside Viktorija P.

The duo, now based in southern Germany, released 'Choppy Lips' as their debut single in early February and it is an incredibly confident statement of intent. Clearly in thrall to the '90s, the sound here is a collision of grunge guitars, atmospheric synths, soft vocals and compressed drums.

The music is very reminiscent of the first wave of bands who combined alternative music with sampled drum breaks and synths; the likes of Garbage and Sneaker Pimps. That said, the production values here are very modern; the track is very nicely mixed and there is an appealingly organic sound to much of the synth work.

The comparisons to '90s alternative heavyweights come also because of the quality of the song writing on show. There is a skilful melodic sensibility at play here; The Dirty Projekt clearly aren't afraid of a good hook.

This is a new project that certainly seems to offer plenty of promise. Keep your eye out for future releases over on Bandcamp, Soundcloud and Spotify
