Any critiques overall? First track I got out for someone, I'm proud of it but I know I have some work to do. Most music composition was done by my studio.
Hi Jacob! I totally agree with the points laid out earlier.
You should be proud of this. My only two tips would firstly be cutting some high mids from the lead vocals because now they sound slightly piercing to me. No extreme cuts just a little something to have them be a little easier to listen to.
Secondly the cymbal hit that's panned maybe 25% to the right could be a little less dry to me but that's just personal opinion. You do you!
Really nice mix. The cymbals caught my ears first. The sound a little processed or fake. Add some verb, this tends make them sound more natural. Think room verb.
Also agree with some of others on the vocal. It's poking out a little. This might help with sitting the guitar in contrast to snare. To me snare and guitar should work tougher like kick and bass.
Hi Luca :) I'd say it's not bad! Maybe the kick is a little too distorted when there are fewer instruments. In the intro, I personally would try to make it a little softer and maybe after the first vocal, saturate it a little more, or even start the whole track with automation, both on the kick and everything else. Then the same thing from 1 minute and 50 minutes in when there's the break. Maybe I'd lower the volume of the synths that start after (the ones panned on the sides) slightly, like 3dB (no more). Have a good day!
It starts off really well. After the 1-minute mark, when the bass and kick hit together, I hear some clipping — I’m assuming it’s not intentional. The female vocal (misc) sits differently in the mix between the first and second half; it fits much better in the second half. Also, my ear is looking for the piano to be a bit more mid-focused and with less delay. Of course, most of what I’m saying is subjective, and I’m not really a listener of this genre. But overall, it sounds quite loud — I listened with headphones, not with a sub. But if I listen at a club or something like that, that would match/fit very well. Best of luck!
Nice track! Definitely not my style but it's well mixed. Clear definition and space.
At 1:07 a synth like melody starts and the sound of it sounds quite off to me. Try cutting some high mids from it and it should sound cleaner and more pleasing to the ear. Maybe because it has been too squashed too but that one I'm not as sure about. The sound starting at 2:04 also sound kinda off to me and the sound introduced at 2:48 also sound awkward to me. Try cutting some high frequencies from those as well.
If these 3 synth sounds is something you genuinely think is compelling then stick with it as it's an artistic choice but it's just my personal opinion.
You’ve been tweaking the same mix for hours, is it getting better or worse?
🎚️ You know the feeling, that endless loop of tiny EQ moves and automation tweaks. At some point, you start wondering… am I improving this mix or slowly destroying it? 😅
Where’s your line between refining and overmixing? Drop your truth below!
If you get to a point where you don't know if your mixing decisions are beneficial or not then you HAVE to distance yourself from it until you've regained perspective. Hours, days or even weeks sometimes depending on your unique context. Your first time listening to it after a while away from it is the closest you will ever get to being a listener and not just a mixer.
Hey guys! Just a curiosity question... 😉Since I started Soundgym in April, I've been really enjoying playing the Compressionist game, as you can see in the screenshot below, and I was wondering who are those 4-5 people that are on higher levels than me😏? Who are you guys 😜? Wanted to say Hi 😇! And just FYI - I am coming for you 😎
Congrats on the outstanding accomplishment! I haven't been playing Compressionist consistently for a while, got frustrated with it being seemingly impossible for me to exactly match the level with gain slider (not enough resolution?), then 2nd guessing myself as whether or not I have the correct settings. I find it much more of an issue in the higher levels when the choices include all the ratios, attack & several release options. Anyways, enough of my rantings, cheers!
