Mixing: Instinct Vs. Reference
When mixing in music, which do you trust more? Your instinct or your references?

🎚️ In the mix, do you lean on your gut feeling or stick to trusted references? Some producers swear by instinct, others won’t mix without A/B’ing.

Where do you fall: instinct or reference?

Let’s hear how the SoundGym Community mix best.

Sampling Isn't a Trick
From The Prodigy’s Firestarter to Beyoncé’s Crazy in Love, some of the world’s biggest hits were built on samples. It’s not about stealing, it’s about retelling a sonic story, blending the old into something new.

Hi,

I’m not sure if this topic has already come up, but I’m curious whether you, like me, have your favorite and least favorite games here. For me it looks like this:

Favorites:

EQ Cheetah (fast and simple, plus the ticking clock adds a nice bit of adrenaline)

Feedback Eliminator (I was charmed by its simplicity)

I also enjoy all the games related to panning.

Least favorites:

EQ Mirror (those tiny details… it takes so much time)

EQ Knight (also detail-focused — sometimes a difference of just a few hertz in one filter decides the correct answer, which makes it frustrating)

What about you? Do you also have games that make you smile when they pop up, and others that make you want to skip the moment you see their icon in the queue?

i cant with EQ cheetah. If i werent focusing on timing i would not care. Its OK but just that im doing good way better than the time, i end up looking a the time and my brain dies. Train your ears i can do it instantaneously here mind just cannot. Pan girl and the double pan ones are by far the best, dB only when you're on a good high, and honestly with EQ mirror it was my favourite till i ran out of tracks, having a good song you have no idea about and messing around to get it perfect made me feel amazing, now im EQ cheetah'ing THAT.

Compressionist, once it starts adding ratio - quickly becomes incredibly hard. 4:1 and 8:1 sound identical to my ears. I know what i'm listening for, but its just not there!
