What was the first spark?
Absolutely the groove. I tend to view the whole track as a giant drum kit, so even the melodic elements primary function is to support the groove.

Thanks @Darth pHrank and @Vittorio Di Rocco! Vittorio, regarding that concept, I played in funk bands for years before getting into electronic music, and I think that's a core principle in funk, and is one of James Brown's biggest contributions to music.
