Hey guys! Just a curiosity question... 😉Since I started Soundgym in April, I've been really enjoying playing the Compressionist game, as you can see in the screenshot below, and I was wondering who are those 4-5 people that are on higher levels than me😏? Who are you guys 😜? Wanted to say Hi 😇! And just FYI - I am coming for you 😎
Hi Luca :) I'd say it's not bad! Maybe the kick is a little too distorted when there are fewer instruments. In the intro, I personally would try to make it a little softer and maybe after the first vocal, saturate it a little more, or even start the whole track with automation, both on the kick and everything else. Then the same thing from 1 minute and 50 minutes in when there's the break. Maybe I'd lower the volume of the synths that start after (the ones panned on the sides) slightly, like 3dB (no more). Have a good day!
It starts off really well. After the 1-minute mark, when the bass and kick hit together, I hear some clipping — I’m assuming it’s not intentional. The female vocal (misc) sits differently in the mix between the first and second half; it fits much better in the second half. Also, my ear is looking for the piano to be a bit more mid-focused and with less delay. Of course, most of what I’m saying is subjective, and I’m not really a listener of this genre. But overall, it sounds quite loud — I listened with headphones, not with a sub. But if I listen at a club or something like that, that would match/fit very well. Best of luck!
Any critiques overall? First track I got out for someone, I'm proud of it but I know I have some work to do. Most music composition was done by my studio.
That's a very respectable mix. I feel like the kick is a little on the tubby/muddy side to the genre. I feel like this kind of music wants a nice, round mick fleetwood style kick or something a little more modern and tight. This is kinda neither of those. I wouldn't call it a dramatic issue though. The vocals felt like they were poking out a little too, but not egregiously so. This is very solid.
I really enjoy the features of Soundgym, especially the Compressionist exercise, which has been very helpful for my work. It would be even better if there were a compression practice mode specifically for vocals!
