Hi, Good job, I think it sounds good. Maybe it needs a bit more work on the reverb of the vocal. (Too wet or too much decay, or too much predelay?) I don't know how it'll sound in your case but you can try to sidechain the reverb of the vocal with the dry vocal. It will allow the reverb to fill only the blanks.
hi ruben, really beautiful track. i really like the reverb. but maybe the sound of the reverb is sometimes too "metalic" . And also maybe the vocals need a little bit of a de-esser. But overall a wonderful song.
I'm not a pop mixer, so spoonfuls of salt for everything here. However, I did recently ask for vocal mixing tips from the A-level pop mix engineer in the next studio room 😅.
A couple of things came to mind with a single listen: - I might try spreading the backing uu-vocals a bit to the sides, to create width and keep the center to the lead vocal. Somewhat related, for the doubled line at the end - I found the 3:06 doubling effecting slightly distracting.
- The backing vocal sounds just a bit pitchy, perhaps could take a bit of tuning?
- I might try a couple of different reverbs, and perhaps even tiny delay for some additional movement. From the top pop mix engineer: he often uses a bit longer hall reverb for deeper/wider reverb, and another (often platE) for slightly more overt stuff. For the main reverb, might try a bit longer one with slightly less wet setting - not to get too focused on the reverb sound. But of course it's a stylistic choice as well.
- The hum in the breaks disturbs a bit. Sounds similar to the acoustic guitar recording I did recently for a feature, with soft guitar dynamics. The noise removal of iZotope RX is a great tool.
- The guitar slide sounds were just slightly jarring at times. I love the sound of a human playing, but it was on the limit of distracting to me. The latest version 8 introduced specific tools for cleaning guitar sounds a bit, it could be helpful for some of the slide sounds
- On the arrangement: the backing guitar gets a bit repetitive imho. There are a few breaks, but I noticed my ears craving for some more change in the rhythm. Some change in the pattern or arrangement would be great to keep interest. As an example, starting with a less busy supporting guitar, and upping the activity towards the end. Or perhaps changing the pace throughout the track - slower/faster/slower/faster.
- Bigger arrangement picture: it's a pretty long 4m30sec track. It's difficult to keep the ears interested for that long, without some changes / progression throughout the track. And though the voice and track is beautiful, it's also fairly similar for the 4m30sec.
All in all it's a beautiful track. Great mood and beautiful voice! All of the above is trying to come up with any additional thoughts 😊
For me the sibilance stuck out a bit too much, which is further emphasized by the reverb you chose. I'd actually not use a de-esser or rx noise removal in the first instance. I would first do some clip gaining and turn down certain "s" in the vocal and harsh guitar slides. And then in the next instance I would decide how much de-essing is needed. Sometimes a de-esser (or maybe oeksound soothe) on the bus before the reverb helps as well. Nice track. Regarding the songwriting and arrangement I agree with Tuomas, it's too long or there's not enough change or progression throughout.
Beautiful work and track! You can leave it as it is and it is very nice to listen to. But if you ask for a critical listen I can confirm what the others said before. The "s" and "t" consonants must be controlled a bit. I'd also darken the reverb a bit to get a warmer feel for the song. But just a tiny bit. Maybe if you control the consonants you dont have to darken the reverb. Otherwise really good job! Cheers!
Doubling + delay/reverb generates a weird feeling at some moments (e.g. 1:23, "help"), watch out for that kind of things if they are not intentional :)
1 props
