Very strong composition, did you participate in this? Or just mixing it? It's not my style so it's harder for me to give feedback, but I will share some things: - The vocal seems to be sitting a bit back. Maybe get masked by other elements in the mid section. I feel like overal there is a bit of masking going on. I feel a bit too much going on in the mid section. There seems to be a lack of space in the mix. All and all not a bad mix and centrainly not a bad song. Take my advice with a grain of salt, I am still learning also and this is not my style of music. Good luck and happy producing!
I think its a good song. I really like the instrumentals. I wish the vocal was stronger. At 0:19 vocal starts but it feels like piano is overwhelming it. The change of rhythms is kinda cool.
Hey Leon and Aga, thank you! I worked on the composition and recording as well as mixing this song. I've been doubting the vocal performance a bit t.b.h and I get what you mean with the muddy mid. I cleared a bit of the lower end right before this mixdown, but I'll have a look at the mid a bit more and possibly try and re-record the vocal to see if I can get them to be a bit more powerful. Thanks again and have a great day!
Personally, I think the vocals are terrific. You could duck the instrumentation with sidechaining in places where the vocals aren't coming through as strongly as you'd like, and/or try parallel compression to get the vocals to cut through the mix a bit more. The arrangement is a bit sparse until the last minute or so which is where the mix needs work by carving out the frequency ranges that each instrument and the vocals (will) sit in to get rid of the mud. After you've done that, try adding a bit of reverb (but make sure to EQ it down to just the mid-range) so as to not pick up any mud from that. Overall, the song and mix are quite good. Good luck!
Hallo Tim, great song! I think the mix sounds already good as it is. So what you need are just minor adjustments, mainly in reducing gain on certain instrument tracks. The drums are at the right level with the vocals, but the guitar tracks could be cut down some. (I don't think sidechaining or parallel compression alone would be enough unless you are ok with some serious ducking.) Other than that you need to do some EQ sculpting to free the instruments from frequencies they don't need and that are in the way of other instruments, mainly in the low and low mid domain.
I agree with Linda, the vocal is spot on as it is. I wouldn't do it over. But I don't agree that the arrangement is sparse. It's perfect to me. Great song, great arrangement and execution. I'd love hearing more of your music.
Very perfect drum sound. But the Vocals have to be more in front and 3-4 dB louder. It could be helpful to bring some brilliance from the highs. Also you can play with the stereo- image and bring more instruments from the middle to the sides. So the Vocals sit better in front.
@Aart dB Thank you so much! Can't wait to try out your tips 😊 I have a link to Spotify on my profile if you're interested in hearing more of my music, it's always great to hear what people think about it!
@timo Horst Thank you for the tips! Changing the stereo image is a great reminder, I haven't been playing around with the instrument panning too much since I got the base mix set up, definitely going to give that a try!
Hello, as written before, to me vocals are a bit in the back. But man, what a mood!!! Listen to it 3 times already! Reminds me of massive attack. Great work, I really enjoyed listening to this.
yeah feel like i got a similar problem as you (although my vocals arent as good as yours yet). But i feel like you dont really believe in yourself enough right now (and yes, that reflects back in your creations), the vocal take sounds good, love your voice! turn it up a bit! (also id add a little compression to reduce the dynamics) If you want to take it to the next level I'd recommend filling the spaces where you are not singing with delays, adlibs, background vocals, screams whatever. It keeps the track flowing, if you focus on it with some of your favorite songs I am pretty confident you will hear them doing some of the above. As it helps remain the flow and also blend the vocal with the beat. Hope that helps Tim, love to hear you evolve!
This is an awesome track. I love how there's so much diversity between sections (both in the style of the song and how you mixed it). What time signature are you using at the start? It sounds like a 4/4 + 7/8 or something but I can't tell...you're cutting out a beat or something, but too hard for me to count, lol. Either way, super cool effect from it.
Only crit I can come up with is - do you just have one guitar track? It sounds very front + center...I haven't mixed guitars before, but a lot of the youtube videos I've been watching have recommended to always double rhythm guitars and hard pan them left + right. It could add a lot of width to that section.
@Peter Livesey: Thank you so much for the kind words! The song is actually 4/4 all the way through, but the accented hi-hats doing triplets give that effect.
I actually doubled all rhythm guitars and centered the lead one in most places. Are you talking about a specific section where you hear it front-centered? It might need some tweaking :)
