Hey there :) I have got about as far as I think I can go on this mix without feedback from some more experienced ears! Just a heads up that although the vocal sounds pretty good, is only a scratch take and I don't have any doubles which I'd definitely add. This is my 2nd attempt at mixing drums and so it's no surprise that I feel that these need the most work. Totally open to suggested and feedback. Hope you like the song! Thank you in advance :)

Great tune. Hardly experienced but the kick seems very in your face and perhaps even sounding a little disjointed compared to how you've processed the rest of the kit?

Hey Tom, this is a really nice track. I'd leave that scratch take in, it sounds really good (I wish my scratch takes sounded this good ;P)! The drums do need a bit of work so if you're new to mixing drums, here's a couple of tips.

1) Your bass drum sounds a bit beach ballesque and the snare a bit boxy. Try to cut around 200ish on the kick and 300ish on the snare. Could be a bit higher on both so sweeping the frequency and trying to find where that tone comes from will be the best approach. If you used overheads/room mics, there's usually boxiness in the 400-800 range. If you already cut in these areas, try to cut a bit more, as it still sounds kind of boxy. It's tough to find the right amount because if you overdo it you can suck the life out of a kit, but with practice it gets easier.

2) I think the bass drum and snare drum could also use a touch more of attack on them. Usually a good attack frequency is around 1-2k for a bass drum and 2-3k for a snare drum (unless you want a heavier/more aggressive sound, then go higher). I think somewhere in that range will fit this song stylistically. Again, sweep the area with a narrow Q and center in on a nice attack frequency.

Hope this helps, really nice track and looking forward to hearing more!

Thanks guys!! I also got some feedback from a mix/master friend and he said to add some low end to the vocal an intro guitar, bring the vocal upfront more and yes, to turn down the kick and snare and re-eq. Will update when I have a new mix!
