Bit of 7/8 magic for the MUSIO Kids in the back...
Quick question: how are people final mixing drums? do you bounce down to a stereo file then put it in the project or are you doing individual stems? ie kick, snare etc
(Tried bouncing to stereo file this week and I kinda dig it. Maybe my snare is a bit loud but I think it glues nicer,)
Anyway link below for those all-important criticisms and feedback on how I can become more adept at mixing and producing!
Your intro is very artsy. In a good way. I like music that sets a mood :) Around 1:10 I'm waiting for more to happen though. Maybe finding a middle ground between building and also changing things up a bit would be cool here.
Going into 2:00, the arpeggios have caught my ears and are doing their job well as I'm in it, waiting for how they develop. Also that one gated synth/ arpeggio that play in the lower mids is really tasty since it feels like it's speeding up, giving the whole song a whole other vibe.
Coming into the instrumental section, I love that transition as well as the idea to just have that. Drums could come up quite a bit for me here. Except you want to make is still super ambient. But then I'd also have the drums less compressed. Right now they feel super loud and tight and should therefore also be upfront, definitely louder than the horns or the soft piano elements..
General mix is pretty good. In the ambience section, there's nothing poking out unnaturally. I could see some more stereo width there potentially? For the instrumental section, I think you can do better in terms of balancing drums, bass, piano and guitar and then the horns on top.... I hear it groovy and therefore lots of drum and bass, rather than atmospheric... but that may also be a creative decision.
Really like the vibe you got there ( I was half expected a John frusciante singing part at some part ), especially those arpeggio at 2'00 ! I second @Hadron Sounds in regards to the drum&Bass. Like he said it' might be a creative decision, i personnally would have seen the drums with less Hi's andat the opposite a bit more brightness and crunch to the bass :)
As for the drum stems,i used to mix directly with the Virtual instrument track ( addictive drums ) so all on one track really, but lately i've come more and more into the individual STEMS side of the force, it's more challenging haha ! ( Although i tend to try to mix it only on the drum bus and go to the individual tracks only if reallly necessary )
That's my little contribution to the community, but overall really liked it ! :)
thank you for you feedback as always! I have made notes to take onto the next production! It would seem the stereo mix of the drums was off, maybe i will separate the cymbals and hi hats into their own track and mix like that. I like the idea of Komoys just using the drum buss to get the right sound tho! Its like the stereo technique but with more flexibility!
Stay tuned on Sunday for more and thank you for taking the time out of your days to listen and critique! I really appreciate it!
OOH! Cool vibe dawg! I love odd meters, especially when you make them feel tangible! Great track. I could cruise around in my little whip vibin to this all day!
As for your drum question... Depending on the song, I personally do a combination of stems and a bounced drum file. I'll leave my kick, snare, hats and overheads as individual stems. And after processing them to get them sitting in the mix the way I like, I'll then bounce the entire kit to one file and tuck them underneath the main kit. After checking the phase correlation, I'll decide if I like it there or not. From there I'll decide how creative I want to get with that master drum track... Maybe some heavy compression for some energy and added harmonic colouration, maybe an EQ and Verb to emulate a certain room sound. And I often send that master drum track to a parallel track that has something like the Waves Berseker or a Vertigo VSM-3 distortion module on it.
Really I think it comes down to what serves the music and your own creativity.
I have to agree with Fr Ank(too) here, Whatever serves the music and the artist is the good way to do things :)
