First post here and hello everyone! Here is one of my newest tracks... I was going for a wide, dark, industrial vibe and I think I nailed what I was going for (as far as production goes)
Someone said Industrial and caught my attention. :)
This is AWESOME, don't change anything! The sub is ultra evil! The atmosphere is dark and AWESOME! And the cat sanple at 1:44 and 2:25 is just plain AWESOME.
There, had to get that out of my system. :) Style-wise, I'd call this maybe Ambient Industrial or Electro-Ambient? Reminds me a bit of Haujobb., check them out!
Another artist that springs to mind is Speedy J, during his Public Energy No. 1 / A Shocking Hobby era. I guess those albums are classified as "IDM", but to me they're just plain insane. Not Aphex Twin level insane, but Speedy J managed to produce a much darker and more ominous atmosphere. / End rant
Production and mixing sound really delicious to me and personally i like it! The only thing i think could be better (louder) is Mastering, You can even see it at Soundclouds Graphic of you track. I think Dynamic range is to high. Maybe little compression and pushing way more into limiter could do wonders.
@Arthur Reich what, aren't the Loudness Wars over? :D Granted, the LUFS could be higher. @Jason Lorenzo it could be worth submitting the track for mastering - human or automated. Since you are a Soundcloud Pro member, you could try using their mastering service.
As I have never been an avid consumer of electronic music I can't say anything about the genre. And being someone who can't really do a proper mix yet I won't dare to say a single word in that direction (though it sounds very nice to me). But as a music listener and kind-of creator I can tell you this track is great. I love everything about it (that cat's "mrrr" is the hotspot, for sure!), specially the huge silent gaps between sounds on some passages and the trumpet-esque motif is killer, though it brings to me a different vision than a scared cat: it's a perfect tune for a stray cat's funeral march on the streets, IMO. Great job!
@Mikael Nyblom haha rants are totally cool. Thank you for listening :) I was going through a "all my music sucks and no one listens" phase yesterday, so... you taking the time to listen is AWESOME in itself. I thank you (my ego thanks you too...haha) for your feedback as well as some new music you have given me to check out and listen to.
I wish there were buttons I could push each with various levels of "KICK-ASS-ed-ness" because you sir, would get the highest level possible. The "Chuck Norris" button.
This is insane yoh! Ver dramatic. I love the ambience. I'd say something like Cinematic Trap/Electro fusion something like that...all in all good stuff!
@Arthur Reich I LOVE how you used "delicious" to describe the production and mixing. I frequently use "tasty" similarly.
I usually take advantage of the mastering services over at SC but I wanted to give Ozone a run for the money I spent on it lol. Obviously, need to spend more time with it so what you said is really good to know! Thank you! I kind of settled on a preset with a little shaping to the dynamics but the output level left me concerned. I will go back into the session and see if I can squeeze a little more out of it. In the end, I'm probably going to use SC for their mastering services.
Here's a question:(@Mikael Nyblom, feel free to chime in as well - or anyone else for that matter ;) Should I leave the coloring that Ozone has added, and allow SC to Master my Master? or Should I give them the pre-master to start from scratch?
@Arthur Reich I will have to dig up my rough cut of this track, with like 0 dynamics. It took 100% of me to get away from that style/sound. I really liked that version a lot, but recently I have been a little too lazy in the dynamic department. I pushed as hard as possible to get as loud as possible, and didn't care how I got to -6 db (which is what I aim for)
Thank you for listening @Arthur Reich as well as your "tasty" use of adjectives... (totally being serious here, I love that kind of thing) You get a Van Damme Button. (which is right below Chuck Norris, but still cool AF)
@Cuantasvacas Thank you for the time you took to listen to my song as well as your emotions. Emotions evoked in others is very interesting and enlightening to say the least. We all know our own responses to our own creations, so, it's nice to hear another perspective of one's own work. Our perception is just as important and unique as what we create. It is what makes us unique, so I appreciate your world -> 100% of infinity.
As I was telling @Mikael Nyblom, I was feeling very, "My music sucks and no one listens," yesterday. Yesterday's problem has become today's answer. And, the answer is engagement.
One thing though, you referred to yourself as a "kind- of" creator and "someone who has yet to make a proper mix," and I just want to say that your Soundgym story was inspiring and very interesting. Not to mention, I wanted to become better at what I do because of your story (and others like yours too ;) I don't remember all of the particullars, but I remember the overall feelings when I was done reading. I wanted to comment and shake your hand, but settled on an understated thumbs up due to work schedule. I also see you over at Tonegym putting in the work as well!!!
People notice. And creators notice creators. If you are here, then you are there... If you create, then you are a creator. If you play an instrument, you are a musician. We have been listening to music our entire lives (and much more, if we had cool parents.) We will be learning for the rest of our lives. So, does one join an army, or do they join the school of the army? I just wanted to say you inspired me, so quit referring to yourself as "kind-of" anything! You either do, or you don't create. And you are definitely a "do'er" kind of person, my man.
@Cedz Imagination thank you for taking the time to listen and I am glad you liked it. I am terrible with genres because I generalize and simplify everything. To me, everything is under an EM category... I heard some of your mixes man and I couldn't get over how clean your mixes were. Specifically, how clean your lows were. So, your praise is much appreciated. Chuck Norris Button for you!!! @Cuantasvacas Vacas (forgot to give you a button, but the same for you too)
I'm glad you loved the expression. I nearly always think about which word to use :) Mastering is btw really worth putting time in as the technical part really isnt that much(takes me around 15-30min) and you gain a lot of value of it in my oppinion. Often making deep frequencies more mono, spreading mids and higs a bit, little compression, Tape saturation, minimal eqing (max 2db difference) and pushing a bit against a limiter do the job. And i definitely recommend an analyzing tool for peak, LUF, dynamic range. For me it's Maximus, Help Satuartor. Parametric EQ2. Fruity Limiter and LEVELS.
It's nice to see some other Fruities proudly showing off around here! 🍓
@Jason Lorenzo , BTW, it is so illegal to post so many (kind) words and paragraphs about someone else inside the comments section of a post originally from you, specifically when you're asking for critiques, advice or feedback about a song/track you made. Now you know.😁😜
Seriously, I'm glad you found any kind of inspiration from the massive brick of an interview SoundGym did about this guy. And I thank you for your vehement correction about the "kind-of". You're right: I AM a creator and I've been one since I can remember...My hesitation comes from the fact that I haven't been able to see how strong was my need for creating until 3 or 4 years ago, and now at my age all I can think of is "that chance is gone forever". But people like you, from time to time, push me to go on and take a different, positive perspective. 👍
@Jason Lorenzo Ahh, Ozone. I used to just use the "All together now" preset in Ozone 3 to just smash everything into maximum possible loudness, and that was basically my "mastering" process. I stopped cheating since then and now I'm trying to walk the long hard road (that's why I'm here). Would probably not work on your track since it's so dynamic.
Tbh I've never used the SC mastering service because I'm a cheapskate. :) But the general advice when submitting for mastering is that there should be no effects on the master bus, and there should be absolutely no clipping. Others with actual experience from mastering with SC or any other service might want to chime in here.
@Cuantas Vacas chances come and go. Remember that although some chances are lost new ones appear. :) I can totally relate to what you're saying; I'm 47 years old and I'll never make it big - but a long time ago I realised I didn't *want* to make it big, and that freed me creatively as a musician. Hanson-esque backing vocals in a Metal song? Sure, why not? This song is longer than 8 minutes. Not a problem! :)
Fruities and contemporaries. It feels like home here!! @Mikael Nyblom : making it big wasn't ever a goal, even a thing, for me actually. But, being this the third or fourth re-incarnation of my relationship with music throughout my life, it's the only time in which I feel an urge to create and learn all I can about music. I only wish I had all this force many years ago!!
PS: Now I need to listen to that 8+ minutes long song...😅😶
@cuantasvacas vacas you are very much welcome! There is so much hate and shade on the internet these days, I refuse to add to it.
I was just thinking about how we used to write letters to each other back in the day. Can you imagine receiving a 28 page letter in the mail from a good friend you haven't seen in years. It would definitely resemble a brick. but it would mean so much more to you than that.
You can call your interview a brick, but lucky for you I work in masonry... all in all we were, all just bricks in the wall. Stay fruity my friend!!!
Totally agree about old-fashioned letters. Definitely rituals like that had the power of inspiring emotions that today simply don't exist anymore. I remember, as a teenager, being on holidays somewhere and reserving a whole afternoon just for writing to friends and relatives, licking and sticking those pungent stamps...
I have a language question for you: masonry refers to the group of different tasks involved in construction -except for plumbing, electrics, sewage system, heating and AC, etc.-, doesn't it?
I have to leave, it's my time for listening to some "Brick" James, maybe "Superbrick"...
@Cuantas Vacas haha... your command of the english language is impressive. I am also assuming that english is not your first language... polyglots have such a deeper understanding of language and culture; I am a fan.
Masonry refers to laying bricks, stonework, foundations, etc. At least, to me it does. I'm sure there are people out there who believe that concrete and tile-work also fall under the same umbrella that is masonry. So, anything that uses a cementuous mixture to adhere one object to another could be called masonry.
@Mikael Nyblom looks like Ozone 9 has come a long way, since 3. I admit, I just through my mix in there, put on a preset and called it a day. So thank you, a little friendly nudge on your part has made me dive in a little deeper.
Oh, and as far as mastering on SC goes, it doesn't give you the level of modification as Ozone does. You just have 3-5 presets to choose from with an intensity slider to blend. I'm sure that it is not as good or anywhere close to human standards, but if you don't have another option, it is better than nothing. Or in my case, being lazy.
Hi there. Cannot judge your mix since its something I am yet to be good at . Love the overall vibe, production wise its very good . Its definitely good job ! (Did you use mndala vst or something ? haha )
Thanks for the info, @Jason Lorenzo . It's always nice to have a chance to ask the best source possible, and fill the gaps dictionaries are full of! Also thank you for the compliments but I can't call myself a true polyglot since my own written english is not as good as it looks. Due to lack of practice for many years and no speaking at all, I'm relying on dictionaries and grammar books on a regular basis in order to remember what I've forgotten but also to learn new words and structures.
I am a much more avid learner now than at school, high school or college!
@Agnese Danilova thank you for listening and for your feedback. (Your mixes sound pretty darn good, if I do say so myself)
I did not use mndala and I didn't even know that it existed. Thank you!!! I just checked out a video of it though and it looks pretty fun.
I used Vacuum Pro from AIR as the main synth and a combination of FLEX instances with presets (preset synth) in FL Studio. With some ADSR tweaking and automation, as well...
@Jason Lorenzo No problem! And thank you very much, haha 🙌much appreciated!
Yess, mndala is pretty much kept under the rock. I have 3 of its sound plugins. Not for everyone though. Needs sort of additional tweaking and effects. However I do think they are good quality and the sounds are definitely mysterious.
I'll check that synth out too haha.
Anyways, well done 👍
1 props
