Hey! This is the first song I’ve mixed in 10 years (and I was never very good at mixing anyway).

I’d love any tips or feedback you have. Comparing myself to the other tracks here, it seems like I’m missing some glue? Not sure how to achieve that really though and maybe lots of other things wrong with it. Any comments welcome.

(p.s. Edited to share a soundcloud link instead of google drive)

Great groove! The two things that .. maybe the main keys at left is a few dB high and front and drilling a little bit (also need eq), and maybe the wind instruments at 0:40 is a few db higher. I'm not a mixing expert, more a music listener. Great song and good mix anyway. Enjoy your music!

Can I ask what you listened to the song on? I'm struggling a bit with translation :). By the main keys, do you mean the organ? Or the clav (the 16th note faster keys) I'll give some eq a shot and bring it down a bit. And I'll do the same for the brass.

Thanks a lot for the feedback. And yep, enjoying getting back into this.

Yeap! sorry the organ I meant.. Something goes wrong with that chords, try to cut some(or experiment with) high freq and pull it back. It's a bit annoying From the start (0:00:02). I'm not in my home-studio the last two days and I' m hearing it through a pair of cheap headphones, but I also hear music through the same gear and I have a reference. (I am professional sound engineer but not a mixing expert ). The other parts are great for me. It has a good balance and good panning. An expert could help more.

Yeah, I think some stereo bus compression with a ratio of say 2 to 1 quick attack longer release would do this some good. I am also going to send you a direct message

Thanks George. The track should sound good on cheap headphones too, so this is helpful. I need to do some more translation testing (also for myself to understand how things are different). And on another listen, the organ is a bit shrill and loud.

And thanks Spencer.

Spencer - quick question, what should I be listening for when I add the compression? Is it just to make the mix louder? Or do you think it has too much dynamic range? I'm always worried about losing 'punch' when adding compression.

Groovy track! I like that! The trumpets (or smth like that lol) are a bit too loud i feel. Also i like the idea of the lots of panning but i feel like you overdid it a little. Also at parts like at 3min the instrument on the right sounds really up fron and the one on the left sounds really far in the back. This creates a bit of a weird unbalanced feeling for me. Like the instruments tho and also i like the groove! Hope that helped a bit and keep it going!

That does help, thanks! Do you know any tips on how to move instruments 'forward and back' in the mix? I totally agree that the organ feels far back and the synth (moog) feels far forward. But, not sure how to fix it, haha.

And thanks for the panning feedback...I feel like youtube tells me to pan more than I like. I should really prioritize my own ears :).
