Hello folks. I'm hoping some keen ears have a take on how this mix/master could be improved or if it's finished. It is an Alternative R&B Hip Hop tune meant to have a haunted, and ominous demeanour.
Great song and vibe. The 808/sub synth is eating all your headroom and is a bit lumpy (uneven dynamics). If you tightened and compacted that with some high pass, compression (and if needed after that adding some harmonics) your song will have room to breathe and come alive. Depending on how that changes the song I'd then take a look at some of the synth elements that cloud the vocals at times, they could perhaps be pushed back a bit so they're not on the same depth plane robbing attention. You remind me a bit of an artist I used to work with a lot named Brent Faiyaz, when we'd do his BGV's we'd separate them from each other using some Soundtoys Crystalizer, just to give each a bit of it's own moment away from the lead, might work here for you, might not, but I really like the world they create so it might be worth a go. Great work!
Thank you both very much for the insight! You make great points I believe.
Jan I'll try to bring the kick and vocal up a bit. Thank you for taking the time!
Darren, Brent Faiyaz is great! Awesome to hear from some one that has helped him on his pretty epic journey. That BGV idea sounds interesting. I'm going to mess around with Crystalizer to that end. Regarding the bass I was thinking it sounded kind of watery or spacey, but I should perhaps have that bass tightened up a bit. After the compression maybe something like inflator, or decapitator, when you say harmonics one of those comes to mind.
Tooooo much lows and low miss on mostly everything. When you have arrangement that have much lows- big kicks, 808, synths, usually vocals are highpass higher like 120-140 hz and boosted like hell in highs. Try to give you kick some high information, this kick have totally zero impact as there is nothing around 3K and higher, and no transient - maybe you compressed it with super fast attack to much( question is if you only mix this or produce as well cause for me it is just not produced well if for example kick have zero high end - you can suggest some ,,click layer'' for kick. Overall it is very muddy. and not transient.
@Nicolae Orengo by all means keep the bass' vibe, if anything getting it stabilized and tucked in will bring your intention across more. I'd wait to see how the eq and compression does before adding Inflator or Decapitator, those can take a lot of space, the compression might add some harmonics and that could be enough to get it to speak. Or maybe try a more targeted tool like Spectre. In the end it's hard to say until it's parked in place and you hear how it meshes with other elements.
Sorry meant to get back to this sooner. @Marcin Giza That is very helpful advice. I didn't think I needed anything from the kick so I low passed around there - you have a great ear! And yes, produced/mixed/recorded/performed, with a few samples, midi instruments, real instruments etc. It's actually one of the first productions I've put together and called 'finished,' about a year and a half ago. Very glad to be able to revisit it and get some advice here, thank you!
@Darren Boling Hey man, thanks for following up! I haven't heard much about Spectre yet. I'll definitely take a look into it though. Appreciate ya!
