Does anyone else feel like they have plateaued on any of the games?
I'm feeling a bit defeated because I can't seem to advance in EQ related games (the most important skill for mixing IMHO). I'm in the mid 80% of players but I can't consistently identify specific frequency bands precisely enough to advance, or if I advance it feels more like luck more than skill.
Has anyone had the same experience and worked through it, and if so how?
it's normal to feel stuck with some games in the gym, it happens to me with some games like Bass detective, distorted reality or pan girl... After a while of doing several workouts I started to notice that I was advancing faster in certain games. It's normal because we all listen in a different way...
If you want to get better at perceiving the frequency spectrum I recommend you start spending some time in the practice section of peak master, kit cut, Eq mirror and Eq cheetah, and make associations of how each zone sounds... ex/: muddy, nasal, air etc. The vowel sound has also helped me a lot! in Spanish it would be: U for 80hz to 250hz, O from 400hz to 800hz, A from 800hz to 2000hz, E from 2000hz to 3500hz, I from 3500hz to 8000hz, and Air from 8000hz upwards. With the English vowels you will have to look for equivalents...
I can tell you with certainty that after 2 years of practice in the gym and a lot of patience and perseverance, my ear has improved 200 % !! however each case is different, and each person may need certain skills more than others depending on the focus of their work... (recording, mixing, producing etc)
¡Conozco los sonidos de las vocales españolas - muchísimas gracias por el consejo! I will have to remember those frequency ranges.
I have noticed consistent progress in the compression and distortion games, so I know my ears are improving (albeit slowly). I'll continue practicing consistently and try to be patient. Thanks again for the tips on frequency ranges.
Your question is very much welcome at this particular time, @Elias N Jaquez , and your answer, @Beto Ojeda , is exactly what I needed to overcome my own 'learner's block', specially in terms of EQ.
I have tried those methods you mention, Beto, but to me it's more important to know that once you were human ;)
And thanks to your sincere declaration, Elias, I can see I'm not the only one finding EQ so hard to untangle inside my brain, way more than any other sound aspects I've also had to learn from scratch since I joined SoundGym.
