I clean them a bit, with linear EQs, but it doesn't have to be surgical, it's alright if there is some bleed of the other instruments if it sounds well. And I listen to the stems more in context, with other instruments, than usually. Also, if we know the acoustic disposition, I think it helps to dispose them that way for the phase and delay relations.
I don't usually, but for this track I did hard cuts around the vocal and edited out all the bleed. I thought this technique would be too obvious when the singer comes and goes, but it actually worked out all right.
i would use Waves Clarity Vx, that is super helpful. At least to stuff that i have worked on
