Lots of automation to try to bring the right things through at the right time. Some drum phasing issues addressed so hopefully bettered by this. The intention had been not to use much compression but have ended up with more than intended, however this seems to be more acceptable with fusion jazz than more traditional jazz from what I have found.
Not being used to the genre, I felt it best to use the CMT mix as reference rather than try to interpret another song onto this one.
Hi Maurice, nice mix :) Ahh yes, Jazz Fusion. I forgot to mention I think there are as many genres of jazz as there are to EDM, and the jazz cats take it just as serious as those that insist there's a difference between jungle & DnB (I believe them...no, really, I do, trust me, we don't need to discuss it :D ). I do feel like there's a bit too much compression here (though the impact of the drums is great!). I do like the bass a lot, though I think it gets a bit too prominent during its solo (could be related to the compression thing). Nice work!
Thanks @Jason Cardin. I'm in my 60s so confused by lots of newfangled genre titles let alone their subgenres!! As for the bass, that's probably because I am predominantly a bass player!! I did suspect that might be the case.
Hi Maurice, nice mix. Good job doing the automation to let every instrument have its place to shine. I don't think your bass is loud, it sounds just fine, but hey, I am also a bass player. Nevertheless during the last session I worked on it I brought the bass a bit back because I realised others might find it too forward. I think the drums have a bit too much sizzle. Between piano and guitars you could have had a bit more separation tonally. Good Job ;)
Thanks @Aart dB - bass players unite!! Good call on the piano and guitars separation, it was something I thought about late on. It is definitely an area that I need to focus on and improve.
