After an interesting couple of weeks of Covid related issues, I finally caught up and was able to do this weeks challenge.
Yay metal!!! No real strategy except to make a wall of guitars sound. For those who haven't mixed metal before there are two things to point out. The kick is usually a midi trigger, hence the typewriter sound. The overheads usually are closed mic-ed cymbals to minimise bleed. The opposite of most other genres. Hope that helps to explain some weirdness in these tracks.
Lot's of metal tricks; Saturated kick click, parallel distortion on the guitars (yes it sounds odd adding more distortion), Hass effect on the duplicate vocals, smash the crap out of the bass with a Sansamp to get the dangle.
The synths added some nice textures, hard to find space once the guitars hit.
The guitar solos were interesting, there was a room verb on them that made them hard to sit in the mix.
Most things were left dry, delays here and there for texture.
No mastering on this; just a Pro-L2 to get it to near -14lufs.
Hi Mark Milbourne ! Snare drum is loud. When the voice sounds, the rest of the instruments are very quiet In the refrain, OH is very loud and the voices are quiet In the refrain of the voice, you need to adjust the rhythmic
Problems with balance and effects. In some places, the instruments jump out of the general sound, and in some places they are very quiet. The voice is beautifully processed with effects, but due to the fact that the rest of the instruments are very dry, this does not work Good luck to you. I will be glad if my criticism from the outside will help you become even better in this matter.
Hey Mark, good one! I agree with Serzh on the snare (being too loud), the vocals could be more loud on the choruses.. the drum kit in general is too predominant for me, and there's a noticeable jump in volume between the verses and the choruses
Hey Guys. Thank you so much for the feedback. I'm not sure what you mean by "In the refrain". But I'm definitely on a big snare odyssey at the moment.
1 props
