Blues Bastards - Sugar
This weeks song had an interesting set of problems to solve. Everything seemed to be really mid focussed, so carving out spaces in the mids and upper mids seemed to be an endless task.
I tried something different this week, I thought I'd try not processing the crap out of the drums for a change. So this week it's mainly the SSL Console G, eq and a little bit of saturation. I picked up the FabFilter Pro bundle that was on sale Friday, so I'm using Pro-R and Pro-Q3 everywhere. A bunch of EQ on the guitars and keys, to put them into their own pockets and generally clean things up.
I found out this week that -12 LUFs is supposedly the target to hit for streaming services. So this weeks mix is slightly louder. I tried the Pro-L2 this week on the mix bus.

Right off the bat I think the kick and bass relationship is in a real nice pocket. That being said, the bass level is a little hot for my taste. the electric guitars sound very clean. Sounds like you did some real nice EQ work in there. The last chorus the electrics are really nice and wide and powerful. I am still trying to figure out best vocal levels based on the genre but I think you could push this one up a lil. Great job man!

Hi Mark
Great mix. Maybe a bit on the bright site. i really dig you kick sound. Great work and really hard to do on the these tracks. Good choise on the fabfilter. Pro-Q is absolutely amazing.
Really nice ballances:)

Everything is nice and clean, great work...but as a listener i want a bit more open sound on mid range...a bit more warm on vocal, maybe you overdo some EQ on that mid range area and your mix lost some fullnes...but its subtle.

i feel like there' s a lot of muck around 300 - 400 hz that would make the mix a lot more clear if it wasn't there. I'd also take the level of the drums a bit down, I feel like they almost overpower the vocals.

Thank you all for your listening time and comments.
The tonal balance on these tracks was a real challenge. It was a great ear training exercise. If this was a mix I had to deal with professionally, I would have, politely of course, asked that the synth tracks have the reverbs removed.
I did go for that growl tone in the vox, which does make it sound more harsh. Listening to it now, it was probably the wrong call. Its weird how just 24 hours can give a new perspective.

I like the balance overall, I feel the track flows really nicely. The cymbal sounds a touch too bright though (it is a really nice sounding ride cymbal so I totally get wanting to boost it, but I don't think it needed any help). The breakdown part with the bell, the guitar on the left sounds muddy/harsh so that might be a good place to go to first if you try to clean it up later this week. Maybe start there and then see if you can fix any of the other guitars the same way.
