Hi everyone, I hope you're all doing well. For this mix, I tried to arrange the drum panning based on the overhead mics, and from that stereo image, I built the rest of the mix around it. I think there are some things that worked, but I also attempted something I'm not quite sure how to do properly. I tried placing the snare on one side and the acoustic guitar on the other, aiming to match their brightness. However, I don’t think I achieved the result I was expecting. If anyone has tips on how to improve that, I’d be very grateful.
I’d also be happy to receive any feedback on the mix in general.
Hey Santiago, the drum kit is overprocessed, especially the snare that is too squashed, the guitars are a bit loud and tend to add congestion on the low-mids, the sax seems to need a bit more ambience to blend within the mix ;P
I feel like the drums lack forward presence. Im hearing mainly the OH mics. I get distracted by their bright character and the snare feeling stereo. Maybe bringing back more close mics would help?
Overall, I feel like the drums could get more mids, and the other instruments get less mids. For example, aim for the tonal balance you have on the drums for the accoustic guitar.
Acc guitar also feel too loud and a bit overcompressed with fast attack. It makes it jump in front too much and becomes distracting in my opinion.
Sax feels a bit distant, maybe using more close mics would help, otherwise it has a nice sound.
Hi Santiago, already very good comments here I like to agree with all. The snare/OH is really much to bright and destroys you frequency balance. I'm missing a punchy drum sound with a well-audible low end. To pan the snare to one side is really unusual and I only would do this in rare cases if at all. The acustic guitar is too loud. A good tip for setting the instrument levels right is to hear your mix in mono. I think you will very quickly notice which instruments are too loud. May be you want give all instruments the same audibility. But that's not possible and not necessary. You will be surprised how clearly you can hear a very quiet acoustic guitar when you mute it and check the difference.
Thanks for the comments, I will try to improve the mix base on that. 😃
