🔃 Revision Day ✔️ ( OPTIONAL ) -------------------------- 🏁 Hi guys! Here we can repost the mix of the previous week and see if it sounds better compared to the older one (made before others feedback)
🎶 The song was: Fytakyte – “Disconnected”🎶 - Post the link of both: the old mix and the new one, in the comment section below! ⬇️ -
I like it better now, i think it all sits a bit nicer together. Turned down the overheads and tried to tame the high freq from the vocals. And I hard panned some guitars, @Jesai V !
1. Boosted energy and clarity in lead vocals. 2. Reduced sub of kick 3. Lowered backing vocals and shaker volume. 4. Enhanced snare presence and tried to correct its polarity
Thank you for listening I'm grateful for suggestions recieved
Still not happy with this and, quite honestly, not sure if it is better or just louder!! I've taken out some of the saturation that was making the guitar especially sound very sharp, but not sure if I've reintroduced some of this in responding to comments about not enough high end in the original. I think the bass is still too loud (which may be the reason for the high end issue rather than actually needing more high end). Also, difficult for me to hear higher frequencies with age, so have to depend on monitoring a lot for this ('use your ears' only works so far as your ears can hear up the frequency spectrum!!) I have brightened the vocals and personally think they now sound better. I've also side-chained them to an instrument buss to push the instruments back very slightly as the vocals appear, rather than turn the vocals up and risk disconnecting them (every pun intended) from the rest of the mix. I think the balance of the drums was better in the original but the overall drum sound I feel is better in the revision.
Over you to review/critique/critisise both what I have done in the mixes and said above......
Thanks to all that commented and helped me see the light (pun inspired by @Maurice Robinson)!
@Jesai V, I discarded all my work on the main electric guitars and started from scratch with more of an ear towards surgical eq. There were some nasty frequencies in there that I just hadn't dealt with. ( I love fixing it in the mix, lol) In the end my signal chain for the guitars was dead simple--EQ, Spectral Panning, and a touch of delay way in the back. To my ear this had a lot of positive side effects on other elements in the song. The vocal sits better now with the mix and seems brighter and more connected, even though I barely touched it in my remix. It also left more room in the low mids from the drums and bass.
I reworked the bass tone from scratch in this revision as well. I had it a little to dirty in the original. Dealing with the wide dynamic range of the playing style was also certainly a challenge that I hadn't fully tamed in the first version.
I did bring back the original kick and snare mics but they are heavily supplemented by samples that I added.
For those offended by my horns, sorry, left them mostly as is, but adjusted the faders a bit. Plus everything sits together so differently after my drastic changes to the guitar tones.
I learned plenty this week! It actually hurts my ears now to listen to Sunday's mix. Reminds my how easy it is to lose objectivity when trying to work through a mix too quickly. Also that every new element brought into a mix has some sort of impact on how the existing elements are going to be perceived.
Thanks everyone for the comments! Here's my revised mix with the following changes:
- In order to tame the harshness on the cymbals I ducked the high end of the drum bus, also dipped a bit at 7k on the drum OH and brought the OH and Room mics down ever so slightly - On the parallel compression running on my drum bus I brought mix of the dry signal up and the compressed down - Backed off the mix bus compression - Brought up the backing vocals at the end because I thought they could be in the mix more
Hey Anton, nice one! The guitars are a bit in competition with the lead vocal and there's an excess of 3k frequencies on them.. the solo is a bit out of the mix, the bg vocals are a tad loud (compared to the lead one) ;P
Hey Amaan, nice mix! The lead vocal is a bit loud compared to the other elements, the kick is still a bit boomy ;P
Hey Maurice nice! The mix sounds a bit dark and small, the lead vocal is loud compared to the other elements ;P
Hey Tyson nice one! There's a bit of rumble on the low-mids at the very beginning, the guitars are a bit edgy and the solo sounds a bit out of the mix, the snare is bit hidden ;P
Hey Nate, good job! The lead vocal is a touch loud and the top end of the drum kit still sounds a touch overprocessed to me ;P
Hey Kovich, nice! At the beginning the reverb used on the backing vocals is too present, the kick is bit boomy and not always consistent in terms of volume ;P
It's a place where ones who want to improve their mixing skills can join their forces with an aim to make the process less boring and more productive
