Howdy folks, here's my smooth jazz version of Ghostly Beard – “Set Me Free”

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-Txm0f3k6jlUWjDOkJekBMVwqlbGPOIw/view?usp=sharing

Cool tune, really enjoyed working on this one. I thought the virtual instruments chosen sounded OK, so I didn't end up using any of the midi tracks. Feel like I got pretty close to what I was going for (close but not quite :D ). I think the vocals were the toughest thing, & I didn't quite get them there. I also struggled with getting to -14 too, could have gotten a few more out of it but started to feel like I was pushing it.
Definitely looking forward to hearing other folks takes!

Meant to comment last week that as always, the feedback is appreciated & I try to incorporate it going forward (and often it reinforces what I already know or have fooled myself into thinking is OK :D ). For @Aart dB - the ilok USB seems to be working out OK. I haven't noticed much speed increase with loading (maybe a little), but I haven't really seen an issue there. It definitely works well for the ones that were requiring cloud authentication (and that does seem a bit faster)

Hey Jason - I immediately like your vocal FX treatment. Sounds like Joe Jackson a little. I think you might have missed an opportunity to add some additional width with the hi-hat. In the overheads, it sounded like it was on the left to me. Background vocals sound nice and the guitar solo section is right on. You have more reverb than any other mix I have heard, and it works for your mix. Vocal FX at the end are a definite plus. Now I'm wishing I would have looked for an opportunity there. I think you could bring a little more focus to the piano in its solo section -- maybe volume, maybe panning. Super good. Not getting -14 seems like a non-issue. You kept the dynamics and transparency.

Hi Jason,
nice mix, good balance, a good mix for sure. Unfortunately I cannot agree with Ron concerning the voice reverb. May be I'm a too conservative guy. We all use a lot of effects and so on, but for that jazz genre I would like to keep the idea of hearing a concert on stage, if only just a little bit. Your voice room is so small and reflective , there is never a place for brass/horns on the stage. Therefore I feel a disconnection between the voice and the rest. But my taste :) I heard your song in the studio with my subs and for me your sub bass is too much. In the 60Hz area you have both, the kick and the bass and on 45Hz the kick is really massiv. Together a little bit too much. I like your toms, better solution as mine, will try to improve it on my revision version.

Hi Jason! I like the mix!. I don't ear problems. it's a good idea but you can develop it better (the vocal reverb is too small for me). for the rest... ok!

Hi Jason,
I hear a high mid resonance in the vocal, but maybe it's the reverb that causes it. Concerning the vocal reverb I have to agree with Helmut, also about the kick drum having too much sub. You have created yet another space for the bckng vox. I think that if you would use sort of the same reverb type on everything and differenciate only the amount, you would create more coherence. Because the instruments are very dry, there is no connection. For a more satisfying lead vocal treatment I often use just a little bit of reverb, and I add a delay around 140ms on a level that is barely audible, which helps create a fullness in the voice.
I think that the effect on the piano makes the audibility a bit harder.
The bass needs a bit more definition in the high mid area, and finally there is a bit of excess high in the drums.
For the rest I think you have a good mix, tonal balance is good. I definitely like your drum sound.

And thank you for your reply about the Ilok key. I'll go and buy one, because I see the advantage when switching between different systems.

Nice mix Jason! Just a bit heavy in the lows, as already has been mentioned, was my impression too. Well done!

I have to agree with Helmut and Aaart DB. the verb on the Vox is a little much, and it seems disconnected from the rest of the mix. There is too much sub in the kick with not enough slap of the beater. The bass can use some tweaking in the Mid - Highs as well. Good job!

Many thanks all! Great stuff here :) I need to investigate the sub thing (I have some ideas what I might have done)
