Any tips on how to critical listen to distortion? My current level at distorted reality is 7 ... At first I focus on the bass, it communicates dirstortion the easiest I think, depending on the song of course. To hear it on voices is also ok. Distortion sometimes adds a bit volume, the reverb gets "smeary"... but the subtile differences I find really hard to hear.
Sometimes it helps me to concentrate on certain percussive hits like the kick for example. I recognised that they can be a bit more accentuated when the signal is distorted. Hope that helps! :)
Sometimes volume gain is a trap in question 9/12 above 😅 had to adjust output volume manually and compare them. Also 10k+ frequency are kind of obvious , listening to the hit hat might help
I'm now focused on trying to listen the high end of the source, because distortion adds extra harmonics in that frequency range... but it is difficult because they are very subtle changes above 10000 hz
Just check if there's a bit of texture (It might sound crunchy or grainy) and do some comparison between undistorted and distorted sounds if needed. I used to use distortions in some instruments when making music and it adds texture to which is really interesting
It helped me to stop thinking about distortion as "distortion," as in distortion pedals. Distortion includes anything that changes the original sound. Compression is distortion.
Thanks a lot to all of you! People helping each other perceiving the world more detailed, I like that.
