I've been using the new Slate VSX headphone system for the past couple of weeks, and I've at least begun to hear details I'd missed before. Most of the games I was stuck on have started to advance again (except the compression ones π)
Maybe those of us with rooms that aren't acoustically treated that well yet can benefit from headphones, at least as an option while that gets taken care of?
If someone can recommend good headphones to do this I'd love to hear it. I've been using Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro's and I just got the Audio Technica ATH-m50s and the Beyerdynamic seem terrible in comparison. I jump between the 2 now depending which frequencies I'm focused on. Beyerdynamics are clearer in the highs to me, but the m50s are better everywhere else I find
I jumped from AKG K271 MKII to Neumann NDH 20, which was a biiig jump. I love these Neumanns. I can listen quite loud on them and they don't bite my ears (I hate biting headphones!). The stereo image is great; the highs are nice and transparent; the mids are super clear and the low end is crisp as well.
I have to add though that I do most of my mixing on my FOCAL Trio; my mixes just sound better when I mix on them. Headphones help me pick out important details that might get lost in the room, especially the low end I always check with headphones to make sure it's right.
@Luke , Those ATH-M50s are maybe the best bang for the buck around and found in studios everywhere, I think Colt Caperune using them as his main headphones too so they definitely can get the job done.
You may also want to have a look at the Slate VSX system that I mentioned in my earlier post, cool thing with these is the various studios and listening environments you can switch between (studio, car, club etc).
I haven't tried VSX, but when there is so much visual marketing around it, I tend to be skeptical. Ofcourse I'm open to be corrected and I'd love to test these one day :)
For me Sonarworks helps a lot when mixing on speakers and headphones. I use the version with the mic to do the measurement of the room. The rooms needs some basic treatment for SW to work well, but you can get quite a decent sweet spot to mix in. For headphones like the DT770 and the M50 there are calibration profiles available right away which is nice.
Thanks @Zeegle Xoran I dunno why but I thought the Slate VSX was a bit of a 'too good to be true plugin' so I avoided it. I'll have to have another look, since my studio is also my WFH office so acoustic treatment isn't viable right now
I have VSX headphones & I don't think they're all that great. I never score as well with them as I do on my speakers. VSX suck for panning & stereo width though you could eventually figure it out - the sound stage in VSX doesn't support panning & stereo width like speakers in a tuned room. Not even close. Also you can always hear the comb filtering when using their rooms. I rarely use the software anymore. I have a Sonarworks profile for them because, as headphones, they are anything but flat. You should see the sonarworks profile - the corrections it has to make to flatten out those headphones is very significant - way more correction needed than for my Genelec's running in a decent room.
@Sean, I have trouble on the panning and width with them too, with my m50s I'm also all over the board on those games. My ears have lots to learn still :) Re: the Sonarworks correction, glad you mentioned that, I'll be working with Sonarworks soon and I'll be sure to test them out.
@Anne, just about ready to start the acoustic treatment and Sonarworks is part of the plan, I only hear great things about it, measurement mic arrived recently so no more excuses to keep putting it off (well Rockwool isn't fun to work with but π) . . anyway glad to hear your results are good with both monitors and headphones!
@Luke, Slate are indeed pretty slick and flashy with advertising so I always take their announcements with several grains of salt π . .
@Zeegle - The sonarworks makes them represent the frequency spectrum accurately - however I have no recollection about it helping fix the panning & stereo width issues. I have not tried it with the sonarworks correction in place so I'll let you know if it fixes that. I don't think it will but you never know till you try.
@Zeegle - I also agree that Slate is loads of talk but not so much action. Terrible support. I'd never buy from him again. Got the VSX's & began having trouble even getting them to work with my rig. Contacted Sweetwater for help because Slate wasn't helping. Tried posting my questions for help n their private FB support site. Got banned from that site even though I was not venting or being hostile. Just documented my troubles & asked for help & was immediately banned without recourse. I tried calling them for support & they never got back to me. I can't state enough reasons to avoid them. All that said I still might take a stab a their plugin subscription as I'm guessing it's not as troublesome as the VSX. If anyone has had bad experiences with their plugin system please warn me off of them!!! ;)
@Sean West This isn't the first time I've heard this review about Slate's customer service. The negatives reviews regarding support was the biggest reason why I went with a PlugIn Alliance bundle over Slate. I haven't personally dealt with Slate...but tread with caution, was the vibe I was getting from past users.
@Zeegle Xoran, enjoy the rockwool :) I kind of enjoyed making panels and doing some more measuring rounds. To see the curve actually change (flatten) in the low mids was already worth it. The only thing you have to be careful about, is not killing all the high end in your room. But you've probably already read all there is to know about acoustics. Good luck!
@ Anne . . you've probably already read all there is to know about acoustics π not even close, it's a fun journey though! Thanks and πon preserving some high end, no 70's dead room for me hehe
