What's up SoundGym people..! I recently just dropped my debut single on all platforms. B4 the release there was some back & forth btwn a different mix engineer and myself mainly in regards to the vocal treatment. The guy is older & has more experience with audio, so 4 a minute I questioned my skills...eventually I re-mixed & mastered it to with some +ve attributes from his mix and came up with a final piece. Let me know what you think personally of the track in general both as listener and creator....all feedback is highly appreciated.
Congrats on your debut release! What language are you speaking from 1:57? As a listener it reminds me of the likes of Dub FX which I really like, easy listening. Honestly in terms of the mix I think it sounds great. The only thing that stuck out to me was the vocal sounding distorted at times (e.g. 1:19,1:31, 2:29).
Nice song! I wish you all the best and hope to listen to more releases from this starting point.
The mix sounds well balanced to me. In terms of sound, I agree with @Miles Walker on voice distortion: I'd say it is not helping in the chorus specially at the sustained tail of the word 'soul'. I like the amount of effect on the rest of the song, though. In my headphones, the guitar motif on the intro sounds way too loud for me to the point it masks your voice a little too much.
As a creator and listener I love songs with reduced number of well-chosen instruments, but that approach can often lead to excessive linearity. A more dramatic variation of dynamics, or changing melodies or sounds of certain instruments structure-wise could help in those cases without changing the tone of the song.
Consider I am just a music lover with very limited mixing skills when you read my opinions. Good luck and cheers!
I want to listen to this song on the beach, its great! The bass has lots of ~300 - 500k (maybe as high as 800) that seems a bit boxy or maybe boomy (check 150 to 300 as well). If that boxy/boomy sound was tamed a bit, I bet the vocals would sound less masked as others have pointed out. (Note: I often overdue mud suppression due to my untreated room, so just double check, I could be wrong).
I appreciate it @Miles Walker I'm speaking Kiswahili in the 2nd Rap part. The distortion happened during the recording stage and I failed to pick it up. I'm happy the mix translated well on your side. Cheers to more great music!
Thank you!! More is definitely on the way @Cuantas Vacas I noticed the distortion a bit too late. In regards to the instrumentation, this was a beat lease I got from a producer online, though I totally get what you're saying. Have a good one!
Thanks for pointing that out @Tyler Roberts I wanted to be heavy but at the same time offer clarity. I'll be mindful of the boominess moving forward
